Attention Seniors

WOW - Can you believe you are more than a fourth of the way through your senior year! It’s been a busy start – classes, Homecoming, Senior Nights for Fall Sports, Getting In: College Planning Workshop, College Application Month, and a session on KHEAA.com and your KEES account with Bob McDermott as well as lots of one-on-one meetings with College Coach Anita Brown and Mrs. Wade.

Don’t forget the theme for fall semester is APPLY, APPLY, APPLY. Apply for admissions. Apply for college institution scholarships. In your spare time, use the information in the Senior Slate and web searches like the one at KHEAA.com to locate scholarships – and APPLY!

The Counseling Office maintains a supply of materials relative to post-secondary education and transition throughout the year. These include registration/applications packets for ACT and SAT and the FAFSA – the Free Application for Financial Student Aid.

Remember you do not need an appointment to obtain the information flyers or applications described in this newsletter. Just stop by the front desk in the Counseling Reception Area and Ms. Glaza will be able to provide copies of the information that interests you.

SENIOR YEAR PLANNING – THINGS TO DO IN THE NEXT MONTH

  • Prepare for the December ACT. Visit for free prep support. Take advantage of the additional prep sessions offered at PHS. Talk with Mr. Smith & Mrs. Valentine for specific details of these events.
  • Talk to college representatives and military recruiters during school lunch visits.
  • Make college visits. Visiting the campus is an absolute must!
  • Apply to colleges of interest by the Thanksgiving Holiday then send transcripts via Parchment
  • Check on college scholarship deadlines. Begin work on essays and recommendations. Many have December 1st Early Decision/Scholarship Deadlines—refer to the school’s financial aid website for more details and timelines.

  • Friday, December 11: KHEAA Individual Consultations about college/financial aid with KHEAA counselor Bob McDermott. Contact Mrs. Glaza in the Counseling Office to schedule your appointment.
  • Wednesday, January 13:Filing the FAFSA Lab Night from 3:30 – 6 p.m. Bring materials and we will assist with on-line application completion. The FAFSA is how you apply for need–based aid like grants and low interest loans.

  1. The Common Application serves students by providing one application that may be copied and submitted to the almost 300 members. Regional schools that participate include: U.C., Xavier, U.K., Transylvania & Centre. To see other schools that participate, visit the Common Application online at

  1. The Selective Service Systemrequires all men to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Those who don’t register risk losing the opportunity to receive student loans and to hold a federal job. You can register online at or at the local post office.
  1. NCAA & NAIA Athletic Eligibility: Senior student athletes who plan to play competitive sports in college are reminded to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse and the NAIA Eligibility Center as soon as possible. Academic reviews began November 1st. Remember ACT scores must be sent directly to the centers. Information on NCAA and NAIA is in the Counseling Office.

  1. ACT, SAT& College AdmissionFee Waivers: Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, wards of the state or foster children are eligible. Two ACT/SAT fee waivers per student will be granted over the junior and senior years as long as funds are available. Students who qualify for ACT/SAT fee waiver may also be eligible for college admission application fee waivers. Request through the Counseling Office.
  1. “Get Ready for the ACT”at Maysville Community Technical College – Maysville Campus. Sessions are from 6 to 8 p.m. Fee is $39 and book.   1. Kyvl.org, Learning Express Bring Practice Modules for Testing - Do you want to practice the ACT, WorkKeys, or other testing that is coming your way? Check out KYVL.org to find full-length practice tests. Go to KYVL Resources, and Learning Express. Everything you need is there to find practice tests and maybe tips on test-taking.   1. ACT Prep Course @ Sullivan University/Lexington– Sullivan University will be hosting a 2 –day ACT Prep Course on December 5-6. The course runs 10:00 – 2:30 each day and includes each student’s book and lunch. The cost is $80. Students receive 4 hours of ACT prep in English and Reading and 4 hours of prep in Math and Science.   1. ACT Test Prep @ PCHS–Math Prep every Monday with Mr. Smith in Rm. 310 from 3 – 4 pm. Cost – FREE!!!
  1. Academic Common Market: For students interested in a major not offered in Kentucky, this network of out-of-state schools have an agreement to serve Kentucky students. You may qualify for special tuition rates and still be able to use KEES money to study the program of your dreams at one of these schools. Go to more information.

Apprenticeship Training Opportunity with American Line Builders (ALBAT) - Training includes outside lineman, substation technician, cable splicer technician, traffic signal technician, underground residential distribution, and transmission technician.   1. Georgetown College invites you to visit for a daily tour or Tiger Preview Day. Students who meet with an Admissions Counselor during a fall semester visit qualify for a $500 Travel Grant Award if they enroll at Georgetown.   1. Interested in Medicine or Dentistry? Consider 2016 UofL PEPP (Professional Education Preparation Program. This is a selective college workshop from June 5 – July 1 on the UofL campus. The program is a residential program for graduating seniors featuring academic enrichment in the challenging freshmen level sciences, one - on – one advisement, clinical observation, career exploration and networking opportunities. Students do not have to attend UofL for undergrad to participate in PEPP. Application deadline is March 1, 2016. Information and application packet can be located at All information must be mailed. Be an Athletic Trainer at the University of Kentucky - To be considered, you must be planning to enroll at UK in Fall 2016, hold a 2.75 cumulative GPA, and have interest in a related medical field (i.e. athletic training, physical therapy and sports medicine).   1. Work Ethic Diploma - This senior honor is given out on the basis of multiple criteria that include attendance, community service/internships, organization, and reliability. Application is now available in the Counseling Office untilDecember 13th deadline. Students must obtain 16 of 21 points to earn the diploma. Department of Recreation and Park Administration at Eastern Kentucky UniversityStudents that earn a degree in Recreation and Park Administration are positioned for a variety of career opportunities in recreation, parks and tourism – the largest industry in the world! Gateway 2 NKU offers Two Degrees, One Path – This dual enrollment partnership between Gateway Community and Technical College and Northern Kentucky University is designed for students who intend to complete an associate’s degree at Gateway and then seamlessly transfer to NKU for a bachelor’s degree. Students have enhanced opportunities to take coursework at NKU at reduced Gateway rate, are assigned a transfer advisor for personalized assistance, priority NKU registration, permission to reside in NKU residence hall and have access to other NKU student activities like intramurals, sporting event and participation in Greek life.   1. Thomas More College “Four is More” – Thomas More College has partnered with Gateway Community Technical College offers the Four is More for graduates with an Associates of Arts or Sciences at Gateway. Students who transfer to Thomas More to complete Bachelors with an Associates in Arts or Sciences from Gateway are guaranteed a minimum scholarship of $10,000 plus the opportunity for additional financial aid awards. Keep in mind that In-State Tuition at Gateway is less than half than most other area institutions.
  1. Seton Hall University (NewJersey) – Interested students are encouraged to visit campus to attend any of their Open House events: February 14, April 24. This is the best opportunity to experience campus, learn about admissions & financial aid, and meet with faculty and current students. Campus tours available M-F at 10am and 2pm and Saturdays at 10, noon and 2pm. University of Louisville – Equine Industry Program–UL hosts an Equine Business program—the only one that provides a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from an AACSB accredited business school. Students receive training in marketing, accounting, economics, finance, and entrepreneurship to fully prepare them for a career in the horse industry.   1. Pratt Institute – NY – located in Brooklyn, NY is ranked the #1 school for fine arts and studio programs by USA Today. With almost all programs ranked among the top five or ten in the country, Pratt attracts the brightest and most talented students in the US with 92% of graduates employed within one year of graduation with 20% employed before graduation. Average student to teacher ratio is 10:1, GPA is 3.63. Pratt offers majors in fine art, fashion design, communications design, interior and industrial design, digital arts and animation, history of art and design (BA & BFA), art and design education (teacher prep), writing, photography, and critical and visual studies.   1. Virginia Military Institute – Students are encouraged to attend an Open House program design to give information necessary to make an educated decision regarding college choice. Each event begin on Friday morning and continues overnight. Students will stay in a VMI cadet’s room, while parents/guests must make their own arrangements. Financial Aid Tip of the Month, November 2015 - Check colleges’ net price calculators to get idea of costs! Kentucky high school students headed for college can get an idea of how much it costs to attend a college using the school’s net price calculator, according to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). The U.S. Department of Education requires colleges to have a calculator on their websites. The calculator will require information about a student’s academic standing and about parents’ finances.

  • It is important to remember that the result is an estimate that may be off by thousands of dollars. Be sure to look at the net price, not the net cost. The net price is the amount a family can expect to pay toward a student’s college education, including any loans. The net cost takes into account student loans, which must be repaid, so it will look lower than the net price.
  • Students and parents can get free estimates for up to six colleges across the nation using the “Getting the Facts” program on . To get a free estimate, a student must sign in and set up an account. Students and parents should talk with the financial aid office at each college to get more accurate information.
  • KHEAA is the state agency that administers Kentucky’s student financial aid programs, including the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES).
