MGT 2010, Principles of Management

TO: Students enrolled in Principles of Management 2010

FROM: Bob Reese, Management Professor, IVCC

Hello and welcome to Principles of Management 2010. This telecourse is designed to provide you with a basic understanding of what managers do and how it can be practiced. This course is structured to meet the needs of individuals who require flexibility in earning college credit.

Following are questions commonly asked by students. Read them and let me know if there are any that I may have not anticipated.

1. HOW IS THIS COURSE SET UP?

This course consists of viewing video tapes, completing assigned readings, answering questions in the telecourse guide, and passing tests. You will be completing this work on your own.

2. WHERE AND WHEN CAN I WATCH THE VIDEO TAPES?

The tapes for the course are available during library hours at the following locations:

1. Streator Library

2. Matson (Princeton) Library

3. IVCCAssessmentCenter

4. Graves-Humes (Mendota) Public Library

5. Reddick (Ottawa) Library

Please contact the specific library or assessment center to determine the days and hours it is open. Some libraries have specific testing hours.

3. HOW DO I GET THE TAPES?

A complete set of videos may be checked out at the start of the semester from Jacobs Library. A student ID is required. There is no cost to borrow the video set. Video sets must be returned at the end of the semester to avoid a $40.00 charge. Video sets are no longer available through the bookstore or at local libraries.

4. WHAT BOOKS ARE REQUIRED?

A textbook and study guide are required for the course, and both are available from the IVCC bookstore or online at The study guide will provide

you with a detailed plan for completing each lesson, and following the guide's program will enhance your successful completion of the course. The required texts are:

Text: Plunkett, Attner, and Allen, Management: Meeting & Exceeding Customer Expectations, 8th Edition, South-WesternCollege Publishing, 2005.

Guide: Plunkett, Attner, and Allen, Telecourse Guide: Taking the Lead: The Management Revolution, 8th Edition, South-Western College Publishing, 2005.

TELECOURSE VIDEOTAPE PROGRAMS:Tape 1 through 26

The television component of Management consists of twenty-six half-hour lessons on tape. These programs look at over twenty companies (both large and small) to give you "case studies" illustrating management concepts and principles.

The producer of Management used two criteria to select the companies used as "case studies." The first was that the specific case study would assist you in grasping the lesson’s learning objectives. The second was that the cases be intrinsically interesting. You will find that the video lessons appeal to a general audience as well as a student of Management.

The following pages list the study guide chapters, television programs/case study companies and textbook chapters for all five module tests that make up this course.

To insure coverage and viewing of all the programs, you may want to maintain a running notebook, which lists the theme and key concept of each video unit. Not only will the notebook serve as a fine way to review for exams, but it is also a good way to keep questions and comments.

TESTS AND EVALUATIONS

Five module tests are required. Tests cover the material in the text, telecourse guide, and videotapes. Each of the five module tests are worth 50 points and consist of multiple choice and essay questions.

This course is designed to be completed in one (1) semester (or one summer session if taken during the summer). Each test must be completed by the test date specified on the Orientation Sheet. If the test is not taken by that date, a grade of 0% will be received and CANNOT be made up.

Only under extreme extenuating circumstances will I consider granting any student an incomplete. In such a case the student must have completed at least three (3) module tests.

If you find yourself falling behind, consider dropping the course and trying again another semester.

13.WITHDRAWAL POLICY

"If you do withdraw by the last day for automatic withdrawal, you will earn a "W" grade, which does not affect your grade point average (GPA). Please note: In order to withdrawal for this course, YOU must request a withdrawal from the professor. This request may be in the form of an office visit, a phone call, a letter, or an e-mail. In the absence of the professor, the student must contact the Dean of Natural Sciences and Business(Ron Groleau). I will only withdraw a student if he or she has initiated the proper request or has not taken any quizzes or tests by midterm. The professor reserves the right to withdrawal a student if necessary. All withdrawals earn a grade of "W" which does not affect the GPA but deletes the course credit(s) for the involved course(s). Please see the IVCC catalog for a full description of the college’s withdrawal policy. It is your responsibility to initiate a withdrawal."

See the Course Orientation Information for withdrawal date.
