Course Description

Power Skills is a required course freshman year. It is designed to provide students with knowledge, skills and necessary requirements related to: Certificate of Initial Mastery completion, career related learning standards, state benchmarks in speaking, and creating a personal portfolio. Computers and special computer software are used to develop proper keyboarding techniques and increase speed while improving accuracy. Students also sharpen proofreading ability and refine other English skills. Word processing is taught by having student’s format reports, letters, memoranda and other business/personal correspondence.

State Work Sample Requirements

  • Research and analyze career options and employment opportunities
  • Begin building student career portfolio
  • Research and present an informational speech to fulfill state benchmark for CIM
  • Use technology to process, create and communicate information

Computer Technology

  • Alphabetic, numeric keyboarding
  • Keyboarding technique
  • Speed and accuracy timings
  • Numeric keypad
  • MicroSoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

Evaluation

Summative and formative including completion of class assignments, tests, projects, and class participation will be basis for evaluation. Successful achievement in this course can qualify for college credit during a student’s senior year.

Grading scale:

A = 90% +, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = 59% and below

Student Expectations:

  • Attend class regularly and be on time.
  • Complete work on time. Best work practice and responsible scholarship.
  • Behave in a manner conductive to learning. Pay attention when others are speaking and be respectful.
  • Help keep desks and room in good condition. Do not write on desktops and put all trash in garbage cans.

Failure to keep these agreements and follow classroom policies will result in the following:

  • Friendly Warning
  • Private discussion concerning the unacceptable behavior.
  • A phone call to your parent/guardian to discuss behavior
  • Conference with the administrator/counselor for disciplinary action

Students who follow these ground rules will have:
