South London Innovation Awards

The South London InnovationAwards are to promote the design, implementation and diffusion of innovation in healthcare education and training in South London, leading to improved patient and population health and cost-effective services. The fund for the awards is £500,000.

Innovationis the act of introducing something new; this can include people and their interactions, not just a new technology or way of utilising a technology. Some examples could include inter-professional learning, a new education process or module, dissemination of information in a novel way e.g. via the web or pod-casts, or using patients / trainers / students as innovators.

Diffusionis the systematic uptake of an idea, service or product into widespread use across different organisations and settings.

Application Criteria

Application themes that would be considered for the South London Innovation Awards are:

  • Innovations in diabetes, dementia, musculoskeletal conditions, alcohol and cancer to align with the strategic priorities of the South London Academic Health Science Network.
  • Provision of education and training in community and primary care settings.
  • Better Training, Better Care – improving the quality of training and learning for the benefit of patient care.
  • Increased research participation/research into practice.
  • Improving patient experience.

All applications should:

  • consider how their innovation will improve patient experience, skills of the workforce, partnership working and provide an economic benefit;
  • include measurable outcomes;
  • involve patients and service users;
  • align to Health Education South London and /or South London Academic Health Science Network priorities; and
  • include criteria and methodology for evaluating the project

Applications can be solely for design or diffusion, or for design and implementation, or for design, implementation and diffusion of an innovation.

Application costs

Applications for Innovation Awards are expected to be a maximum of £50,000.

Project duration

Projects for which the award is sought are expected to be a maximum of one year with a start date of 1 November 2013.Funds should be drawn down by 31 March 2014.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications will be accepted from:

  • every member organisation
  • an organisation, team (e.g. front line teams) or individual in South London providing NHS funded care
  • Third sector organisations
  • Locally based social enterprises whose business purpose is to improve health.

The Innovation Awards fund is not to be used for developing new degree programmes.

Completed application forms should be submitted by midnight on 15 September.

Panel

The judging panel will be made up of a combination of South London Membership Council, Health Education South London and South London Academic Health Science Network board members. The final panel composition will be at the discretion of the Health Education South London and South London Academic Health Science Network Managing Directors.

Post-application process

The panel will convene no later than 27 Septemberwith winners being informed soon after.

An award ceremony will be held at the South London Membership Council on 22 October. You should ensure that someone from your organisation is available to attend on this date.

Successful applicants will be required to enter into an agreement that covers matters such as:

  • Scope of project and use of funds
  • Project management, oversight and reporting requirements
  • Project milestones
  • Evaluation
