"Top Ten Ways to Manage the Overwhelm of Your Life" is an active learning session designed to help participants adopt very practical strategies and techniques for taking positive control of overwhelm. The session begins with assessing sources and levels of overwhelm. It than offers a series of proven effective techniques for reducing it. Participants will have the opportunity to apply some of the techniques in the session time. Feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or pressured can negatively interfere not only with personal satisfaction, but also job performance. This session offers solutions.

· Develop and practice techniques and strategies for choosing what to do and what not to do, so as to reduce overwhelm

This presentation will address recent developments in anticoagulation therapy, with emphasis on new technologies that allow providers to more effectively and safely manage patients on anticoagulation therapy. As an example of new approaches, experience derived from the STABLE study examining patient self testing in the real world will be shared and discussed.

In the past the only oral anticoagulant available was warfarin. Recently two new oral anticoagulants were developed. There are now several other drugs in development. These new oral anticoagulants have several advantages and limitations compared to warfarin and what affect they will have on coagulation assays of the future.

The session will cover QA expectations, one analyte- different test methods comparison, preparing for a survey, biomedical testing done by an outside service, performance specification verification, and notification requirements. In addition, other topics such as oversight of testing performed by another department under the main laboratory's certificate and proficiency testing result review and investigation.

· Describe what the biomedical service does for your laboratory
· Develop a procedure for performance specification verification and make sure all the steps are addressed each time a new test method/instrument comes on board
· Institute a meaningful quality assessment program the laboratory can use to further enhance the quality of their laboratory's operation

Mr.Hewett's presentation will focus on the future of health care delivery given the outcome of the November 7 election and the U.S Supreme Court's decision in June. Issues specific to health care laboratory services will be highlighted.

· Describe the importance of involvement in the political process as an association to sustain laboratory services

Intermediate / IQCP: Using Risk Management to Develop the RIGHT QC for Your Laboratory
Speaker: Eileen McConell, MT(ASCP) COLA Surveyor

This session will review the history of CLIA QC requirments and alternate quality control options. The speaker will highlight the CLSI document published in October 2011 "EP 23 - Quality Control Based on Risk Management" and demonstrate how the concept of risk management can be applied to clinical laboratories, using a new alternate QC option "Individualized Quality Control Plan" (IQCP). CMS implementation and transition will be described. Although COLA has not yet defined how this option will be integrated into COLA criteria, the speaker will outline next steps for COLA and COLA laboratories, in order to prepare for the transition from EQC (Equivalent Quality Control) to IQCP.
Objectives:
· Trace the history of alternate equivalent QC options, as described in CLIA
· Correlate concepts of risk management to QC in the clinical laboratory
· Anticipate and prepare for regulatory changes to CLIA and COLA's QC requirements
