DESCRIPTION OF TOPICS AND SPEAKER’S BIOGRAPHIES

Keynote Presentation

Keynote Presentation: Military Tactical Radiology - Have you ever wondered about the Radiologic Technologist's role in a wartime tactical environment? Come explore field radiography in this austere environment and witness how deployable medical systems are used to provide emergency imaging as a result

of war.

John Western, PA-C - Commander U.S. Navy Reserve, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, San Diego.

Breakout Session A

TOPIC 1: Seeing Double: Twins on Ultrasound - Ultrasound screening of twin pregnancies will be discussed including the types of twinning, management and complications in twin pregnancies, and identifying chorionicity and amnionicity. Ultrasound findings regarding twinning will be explored.

Naomi Greene, PhD(c), MPH, RDMS, RDCS - Ms. Greene is the Director of Accreditation for the Fetal Medicine Foundation, USA and a Technical Consultant for Kaiser Permanente’s First Trimester Screening Program.

TOPIC 2: Mammography CSI - What is the difference between a crime scene investigator and a diagnostic mammography technologist? This presentation will take a look at what a diagnostic mammography technologist does through exploring different case studies.

Cherie A. Zweifel, BSBM, RT(R)(M) - Mammography Technologist, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Fontana.

TOPIC 3: Direct Digital Imaging and the Use of Distance in Imaging - Direct Digital Imaging is at the forefront of image acquisition. In this presentation you will learn the history leading up to the Direct Panel Receptor, its construction, and how Fourier Transforms interpret the data to produce an image. You will be given two technique charts to use with digital acquisitions. You will also learn why distance enhances the image and reduces the patient skin exposure dose.

Jesse Platts, BA, CRT, ARRT - Quality Management Technologist, Student Coordinator, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, South Bay.

TOPIC 4: “What really happens behind those closed doors in Interventional Radiology” - Today, we take interventional radiology for granted, as if it has always been available. Much has transpired since Roentgen's discovery to bring us to the point where diagnostic and interventional radiology now work hand in hand. Today we will be exploring IR procedures and the tools used to perform them.

James Brown, RT(R)(CV) – Lead Interventional Radiology Technologist, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Baldwin Park.

Breakout Session B

TOPIC 5: Acute Pelvic Pain in the Non- Pregnant Patient Using Ultrasound - A review of the most common causes of pelvic pain in non-pregnant patients will be presented. Unusual causes of acute pelvic pain along with the clinical utility of spectral & color doppler will be discussed as well as different pathologies in acute cases.

Mani Montazemi, RDMS - Director of Ultrasound Operations, Research & Education for Geisinger Health Systems in Danville, Pennsylvania.

TOPIC 6: Mammographic Findings: Nipple Abnormalities - This discussion will explore benign and malignant diseases of the nipple areolar complex, as well as the details of performing and interpreting a ductogram.

Nehal M. Patel, MD – Radiologist, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, San Diego.

Breakout Session B –continued--

TOPIC 7: Digital Dilemmas with Your CR System – Basic principles of digital radiographic imaging technology are discussed when utilizing a Computed Radiography (CR) System in the medical facility. This discussion will cover the frustrations of technologist and physicians and missing links in answers to questions like: What technical factors to use; what is the required dose for a procedure (ALARA), and what is a good CR processed image. Discussion includes an overview of cassette-based image receptor construction, as well as a brief look at the dynamic range capabilities of digital imaging systems.

Linda L. Ortega, MS, CRT, ARRT, (R)(CV) - Assistant Director/Lecturer JEM College, Corona California, member of the State of California, Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch, Radiologic Technology Certification Committee.

TOPIC 8: Interventional Radiology: The New Frontier – IR isincreasingly involved in the treatment of vascular disease and cancer treatments. We will discuss the evolution of the rapidly evolving field of interventional radiology with numerous new techniques.

George Vatakencherry, MD - Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Los Angeles, Regional Coordinating Chair of Interventional Radiology of Kaiser Permanente Southern California.

Breakout Session C

TOPIC 9: Patient with Acute Scrotal Pain Using Ultrasound - This presentation will review the role of the sonographer in the evaluation of patients with acute scrotal pain. Imaging will be shown to differentiate testicular torsion from infection and other less common causes of scrotal pain.

Mani Montazemi, RDMS - Director of Ultrasound Operations, Research & Education for

Geisinger Health Systems in Danville, Pennsylvania.

TOPIC 10: Patient Radiation Exposures Associated with Mammographic Imaging - With recent media coverage of radiation burns and CT scanners, questions often arise about the amounts of radiation doses delivered with other radiologic modalities – including mammography. This lecture will review the various methods of reporting dose in mammography and the overall risks to the patient.

Tom Oshiro, PhD, DABR, Assistant Professor-Radiology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

TOPIC 11: Current Concepts and Advances in Sports Medicine Imaging - This presentation will discuss the current role of imaging in sports medicine and sports related injuries. Various imaging modalities will be discussed, including musculoskeletal sonography and state of the art magnetic resonance imaging techniques. A spectrum of joint internal derangements and traumatic injuries, as well as postoperative evaluation and complications, will be discussed. Emerging technologies and future directions of imaging will also be presented.

Michael H. Ngo, MD – Radiologist, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Los Angeles.

TOPIC 12: Part 1 PET/CT: Introduction to PET/CT and Clinical Utilization - PET CT fusion is an exciting technology that adds more to the arsenal in the fight against cancer. The talk includes a brief background of the radioactive tracer used and clinical scenarios. If you have issues with memory, such as forgetting the time and date of this talk, a PET scan may be indicated to diagnose your problem!

Geetha Ashok, MD - Nuclear Medicine Physician, Area Radiation Safety Officer, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Panorama City.

Breakout Session D

TOPIC 13: 3D/4D Ultrasound - 3D/4D Ultrasound is now accepted and valuable in the clinical setting and 4D provides motion to the 3D modality. Advantages and disadvantages will be discussed, as well as data acquisition and manipulation.

Donald T. Milburn, RDCS, RVT, AACT, FSDMS - Director, Customer Education, General Imaging, GE Healthcare – Ultrasound.

Breakout Session D –continued--

TOPIC 14: Stress Management for the Mammography Technologist - Mammography technologists are faced with many stress factors during their work day: work pace, short staffing, anxious patients and a demanding specialty. This talk brings to the forefront the issues that technologists deal with on a daily basis and how to circumvent the natural tendency to burn out. There will be practical suggestions for mammography technologists to deal with stress during their work day.

Diane Rinella, RT(R)(M)(BD)RDMS(BR) - Breast Imaging Specialist/Mammography Consultant, San Juan Capistrano.

TOPIC 15: CT-Based Robotic Partial Knee Replacement - Advances in computer assisted technology have lead to additional diagnosis and treatment options for knee arthritis. Attendees will be able to understand the indications for and techniques utilized with CT-based robotic partial knee replacements.
