to assist Architects and Designers in the specification of Marlite’s Flame Safe Panel Systems featuring 7/16” (1.11 cm) thick panels that are attached to finished sub-walls having appropriate support for installation of the product. Marlite’s Flame Safe Panels are Class C and Class A construction 3-ply lamination with HPL faceson wood fiber substrate with a balancing backer.

The section has been formatted in accordance with the principals embodied in the Construction Specifications Institute's Manual of Practice and is intended for use in conjunction with Contract Conditions, Bidding Conditions and General Requirements developed in accordance with CSI guidelines. Notes to the specifier are included. Options that must be selected by the specifier are shown in brackets [ ]. Inapplicable clauses shall be deleted.
SECTION 097710– FRAMED DECORATIVE PANEL SYSTEMS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1SUMMARY
- Section Includes: Decorative 7/16” (1.11 cm) thick prefinished panel mechanically and adhesively applied directly to a solid substrate, utilizing a pre-engineered application process.
1.Hardware: Extruded aluminum joinery moldings, extruded aluminum perimeter trim moldings and mechanical fasteners.

1.4SUBMITTALS
- Product Data: Submit sufficient manufacturer's data to indicate compliance with these specifications, including:
1.Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2.Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
3.Installation methods.
- Shop Drawings: Submit elevations of each wall showing location of paneling and trim members with respect to all discontinuities in the wall elevation.
- Selection Samples: Submit manufacturer’s standard color and pattern selection samplesrepresenting manufacturer's full range of available colors and patterns pertinent to the project.
- Samples for Verification: Submit 6”(154mm) by 10” (254mm) section of panel for each panel selected indicating the color, texture, and pattern required.
1.Submit complete with specified applied finish.
2.Exposed Molding and Trim: Include 4” (101mm) long samples of each type, finish, and color.
- Manufacturers Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for adhesives, sealants and other pertinent materials prior to their delivery to the site (available as downloads for most Marlite’s products at or by contacting Marlite at ).

1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE
ASTM E84 Definition: Strict interpretation of the ASTM E84 fire rating applies only to surface burning characteristics of a panel. Marlite Connections Fire-Rated panels and trim are intended to provide a Class A Fire-Rated application, as defined by ASTM E84 classification, but are not intended to be included in the creation of Fire-Rated demising wall construction. ASTM E84 fire rating for a Class A material requires a flame spread 25 or less, along with a smoke development maximum of 450. ASTM E-84 fire rating for a Class C material requires a flame spread of between 26 and 200, along with a smoke development maximum of 450.
As all current U.S. building fire rating codes are pertinent only to surface burning characteristics of applied materials, the balancing backer is not subject to scrutiny within fire ratings.
- Conform to building code requirements for interior finish for smoke and flame spread requirements as tested in accordance with:
1.ASTM E84 (Method of test for surface burning characteristics of building Materials)
2.Required Rating – Class [A] [C].
1.6DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
- Deliver panels and associated materials factory packaged on strong pallets and properly packaged or protected.
1.Upon delivery carefully inspect all cartons, packages, pallets and protective wrap for damage or material shortage.
2.Open and inspect suspect packages, cartons or wrapped pallets for damage.
3.Contact shipper immediately to report any damaged or missing materials.
4.Contact Marlite @ (800) 377-1221 immediately to report any damaged or missing materials.
5.Contact Marlite @ (800) 377-1221 with any questions, problems or concerns.
- Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.
1.Maintain plastic or other protective wrap in place during on site handling until ready for installation.
2.Keep panels clean and do not stack panels after removal of protection.
- Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.
1.7PROJECT CONDITIONS
- Wood composite panels are subject to the effects of humidity and temperature. Do not use in kitchens, rest rooms, or other high humidity areas.
- Partition walls are to be finished and the building completely closed. Walls shall be thoroughly dry and concrete cured and dry before starting installation.
- HVAC system must be operable and installation area must be balanced to normal operating conditions.
- Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. To ensure product performance, a temperature range of 60°-80°F (16°C-27°C) and a humidity range of 35-55% must be maintained during storage, installation and product life cycle. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
1.8COORDINATION AND SEQUENCING
- Except as specified by the architect, it’s recommended to locate trim members so that panel lines coordinate with doors, headers, jambs and other discontinuities in a wall.
- Vapor barrier shall be used on exterior walls behind backing to discourage warping.
Delete the following if panels are not used on casework
- Coordinate with casework manufacturer. Deliver material to the fabrication shop.
1.9WARRANTY
For longer warranties contact Marlite.
- Standard Warranty: All products shall be warranted to be free from defects for a period of 30 days after installation.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1ACCEPTABLE PRODUCT

1.CP-3 Divider System. A progressive wall panel system featuring a one-piece hidden vertical divider molding that minimizes molding appearance. Utilizing this system requires a 1/16” (1.6mm) space between panels to accommodate dimensional expansion and contraction.
2.CP-4 Divider System. A non-progressive wall panel system featuring a two-piece hidden divider molding that allows for ease of panel installation or replacement.
3.CP-5 Divider System. A progressive wall panel system featuring a one-piece hidden vertical divider molding similar to CP-3, but has an added protrusion in the reveal between panels for aesthetic effect.
4.CP-7 Divider System. A non-progressive wall panel system featuring a one-piece hat channel shaped divider molding that allows for ease of panel installation or replacement.
- The inside of the divider molding can be concealed with a matching or contrasting strip of decorative laminate (HPL).
- An aluminum insert is also available to conceal the system attachment screws and lower portion of the divider molding.
2.2HARDWARE
- Hardware and Trim Material: Heavy weight extruded aluminum 6063-T5 alloy furnished in lengths as indicatedandfactory prefinished.
- Provide the following exposed edge trim, trim receivers, trim profiles and other manufacturer’s standard members as required for a complete installation.

2.Colors

Not all patterns and wood-grain colorways are manufactured as Fire-Rated. When available, certain restrictions can apply for specialty finishes on Fire-Rated laminates. Availability can be checked through Marlite or by contacting the laminate manufacturer directly.
3.Finishes

Not all surface finishes are manufactured as Fire-Rated. When available, certain restrictions can apply for specialty surface finishes on Fire-Rated laminates. Availability can be checked through Marlite or by contacting the laminate manufacturer directly.

1.Class A
- Marlite panels are typically manufactured using various wood fiber substrates having either 75%, 82% or 100 % recycled wood waste. When available as Fire-Rated, a higher percentage may be specified if required for environmental credits.
2.Class C
- Marlite panels are typically manufactured using various wood fiber substrates having either 75%, 82% or 100 % recycled wood waste. When available as Fire-Rated, a higher percentage may be specified if required for environmental credits.
2.4FABRICATION
- All framing, panels, hardware and accessories shall be factory finished and ready to install except for field fabrication as required by jobsite and perimeter conditions.
1.Refinish field cut panel edges in accordance with manufacturer’s instruction before installation.
2.For all cut-outs, drill corners for a minimum 1/8” radius.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1EXAMINATION
- Installer's Examination: Examine conditions under which construction activities of this section are to be performed. Submit written notification to Architect and system manufacturer if such conditions are unacceptable. Beginning erection constitutes installer's acceptance of conditions.
1.Verify that a vapor barrier has been provided on exterior walls behind backing to prevent warping.
2.Verify backing and mounting surfaces are smooth, solid, and flat. [All drywall joints are to be taped and finished].
3.Verify that walls are sealed, primedbefore installation begins.
4.Verify mechanical, electrical, and building service and/or items affecting work of this section are placed and ready to receive this work.
5.Verify that structural stud spacing does not exceed 24” on-center.
- Structural walls are to be finished, with building completely closed. Walls shall be thoroughly dry before starting installation.
3.2PREPARATION
- Conditioning: Panels must be allowedto acclimate to a balanced environment in the installation location for 72 hours prior to installation.
- Protect existing surfaces with drop cloths.
- Except as directed by the architectural drawings, before installing, examine panels and arrange to achieve best combination of color, pattern, texture and grain.
3.3INSTALLATION
- Install all materials in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions and recommendations, with hardware straight, plumb, and level.
1.Anchor units rigidly and securely in place.
2.Cut sheets to meet existing supports.
- Fasten supports and trim using appropriate fasteners into a stud or other solid substrate at centers as specified by the manufacturer. Where screws do not hit the studs, fasten with adhesive in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Pre-drill holes thru the members and fasten the screw flush with the flange on the aluminum profile. Where necessary countersink for the screw head to seat flush with the flange.
- Avoid contamination of the panel faces with adhesives, solvents or cleaners during installation.
3.4CLEANING AND PROTECTION
- Clean and remove dust and other foreign matter from panel and framing surfaces. Clean finishes in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
