AGCAS Teaching and Related Profession Task Group

We represent the professional interests of HE careers services in relation to teaching and other roles and professions within the education sector. The group informs and supports the wider AGCAS community through an annual portfolio of information and other resources, together with national and regional training events.The group also liaises with all key stakeholders operating in the education sector to gather and disseminate information. Publications include Target Teaching and Education Alternatives. Information and news is shared with members through regular newsletters.

Speaker biographies

Richard Wakelin, Head of Education, Novus (Part of the LTE Group)

Richard is the Head of Education at Stoke Heath prison, and has also been Head at Werrington Young Offenders over the last year. Richard will be talking about working in the secure education settings, such as prisons and young offenders.

Steve Brown, Senior Team Teach Trainer, author and SEND Advisor

Steve provides training on de-escalation, physical intervention, ASD, ADHD andbehaviour management. He has worked for outreach services for 16 years. Steve currently supports a range of special school and mainstream provisions in the West Midlands. This includes supporting and helping children, staff and parents/carers. Steve has a range of experience supporting children with severe learning difficulties, ASD, ADHD, communication difficulties and SEMH.

Sabrina Persiano, PTUK Certified Play and Creative Arts Therapist

Sabrina is a PTUK Certified Play and Creative Arts Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, Filial Play Coach, Supervisor and Trainer and Founder of Inner Treasure Play Therapy Centre, which is her private practice based in Sandbach, Cheshire. Sabrina is also a Course Director for APAC Ltd. and Associate Tutor with Leeds Beckett University, and currently trains students attending the post graduate Certificate in Therapeutic Skills in Manchester and Chester. Her presentation is called 'The impact of Play Therapy on children's mental health and emotional well-being.'

Rob Pickersgill, Alternative Education Tutor, coach and trainer

Rob will be talking about his recent experiences of providing home education in Cheshire East. Rob tutors secondary age pupils who are not in full time education and are usually in care or have been adopted. He would especially like to share his experience of one client and his family and the journey they followed together.

Katherine Snell, Learning Officer, Birmingham Museums Trust

Katherine has been in the museum and heritage sector for eight years delivering formal and informal education at a range of organisations such as English Heritage, National Trust and Oxford Museums. Katherine will be focusing on what the role involves, its rewards and challenges, as well as the opportunities for progression within in the sector.

Hugh Simmons, Education Officer, Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge Gorge Museums

Hugh will be discussing working in heritage education, and the various career paths into the sector, as well as his own personal journey.

Tina Clegg, Healthcare Play Specialist Education Trust (HPSET)
Tina will be discussing the role of HPSET and the provision of play and recreation within healthcare; with particular reference to the role of Healthcare Play Specialist.

Wendy Thompson, Family Support Manager, Rainbow Trust
Wendy is Family Support Manager for the North West Team at Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity. She will be discussing her role as Family Support Worker, and how this role is structured at the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity.

Saima Ali, Family Court Advisor, Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service,Cafcass

Saima will be discussing her current role as Family Court Advisor and Children’s Guardian. She has previously worked as a Senior Child Protection Social Worker.
