Broad Town CE Primary School
E- Safety Policy
Principles
• Our e-safety policy has been written by the school, building on the Wiltshire e-safety template policy and government guidance. It has been agreed by the senior management and approved by governors. It will be reviewed annually.
• The school regards e-safety as extremely important and is committed to ensuring that all staff and children understand their responsibilities and provide information to parents.
• The policy applies equally to staff, pupils, governors and all visitors to the school.
Reasons for Internet use.
• The internet is an essential element in 21st century life for education, business and social interaction.
• The purpose of internet use in school is to raise educational standards, to promote pupil achievement, wellbeing and to support the professional work of staff and to enhance the school’s management information and business administration systems.
• The Internet provides pupils, staff and governors access to a wide range of resources and opportunities that might not otherwise be available such as:
o worldwide educational resources;
o inclusion in government initiatives;
o educational and cultural exchanges between pupils worldwide;
o access to experts in many fields for pupils and staff;
o staff professional development and access to professional bodies;
o exchange of curriculum and administrative data with LAs and DfE;
o the promotion of Broad Town Primary School
Policy
Responsible and safe use of the Internet
• The school’s Internet access has been designed for pupils’ use and includes a filtering system (managed by the South West Grid for Learning- SWGfL) appropriate to the age of the pupils. The school does not override the SWGfL’s own filtering system on pupil’s computers or laptops.
• Occasionally and only when there is an educational benefit staff will override the SWGfL for a short period of time on their own laptop e.g. to show a carefully selected video. Staff are responsible to make sure the content is suitable for children and has been fully explored prior to being used. Staff are also responsible that the override is disabled once they have finished.
• The Headteacher will be responsible for permitting and denying additional websites as requested by colleagues.
• If pupils discover unsuitable sites the URL (web address) and content must be reported to SWGfL (Tel: 0870 9081708) or email ()
• Pupils will be taught what is acceptable and what is not acceptable and are given clear objective for Internet use.
Where the children are required to carry out research by visiting a range of sites, they must be supervised at all times by an adult.
• Staff will guide pupils in on-line activities that will support the learning outcomes planned for the pupils’ age and maturity.
• Through our Responsible Internet Use parents and pupils will be made aware of the school rules for the use of the Internet. Parents and pupils are asked to sign a consent form giving permission for their child/ children to use the Internet (Appendix A) and to adhere to these rules at all times.
• Through our Staff Code of Conduct staff are made aware of the appropriate ways to use the Internet. All staff will sign this annually.
• Pupils will not be issued with individual email accounts, but will be authorised to use class email addresses under supervision.
• Periodically, throughout the year pupils will be reminded of the school rules regarding safe internet use. Throughout the year, pupils will take part in planned e-safety lessons using Knowsley scheme of work.
• Copies of the rules for Responsible Internet Use will be displayed in classrooms.
• Children who break the rules of Responsible Internet Use should understand that they may, as a result, be banned from using the Internet.
• Schools will ensure that the use of Internet derived materials by staff and pupil complies with copyright law.
• Children will not be allowed access to public or unrestricted chat rooms.
• The school will participate in regular e-safety initiatives including assemblies.
• The school will address issues of cyber bullying through its regular anti bullying initiatives and through its esafety initiatives.
• Pupils will be taught how to keep personal information safe when using on-line services. Each class will have specific ICT lessons and/or assemblies dedicated to e-safety.
• When preparing lessons which require use of images/ videos, teachers should ensure that these are prepared prior to the lesson itself to avoid problems with malicious links.
• Pupils may only use approved email accounts on the school system.
• Pupils must immediately tell a teacher if they receive any offensive emails or emails that give them cause for concern.
• Pupils must not reveal details of themselves or others (such as addresses and/or telephone numbers), or arrange to meet anyone in email communication.
• Pupils may not access external personal email accounts from any school computers.
• Any emails sent to an external organisation should be written carefully and appropriately.

Risk assessment
• In common with the other media such as magazines, books and video, some material available via the Internet is unsuitable for pupils. The school will take all reasonable precautions to ensure that users access only appropriate material. However, due to the international scale and linked nature of Internet content, it is not possible to guarantee that unsuitable material will never appear on a school computer. Neither the school nor the LA can accept liability for the material accessed, or any consequences of Internet access,
• The use of computer systems without permission or for inappropriate purposes could constitute a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990.
• Methods to identify, assess and minimise risks will be reviewed regularly.
• The Headteacher and Computing co-ordinator will ensure that the E-Safety Policy is implemented and compliance with the policy is monitored.
• If staff or pupils discover unsuitable sites, the URL (address) and content must be reported to a member of the SLT so that the appropriate records can be made and action taken. The site should be minimised, but not closed or deleted, before being viewed by a member of the SLT.
• Any material that the school believes is illegal must be referred to the Internet Watch Foundation and inappropriate sites to the SWGfL.
Responsibilities of staff
• The Headteacher will ensure that the E-Safety Policy is implemented and compliance with the policy monitored.
