I think it needs to have all the club info on the website, as education is the most important thing, and joining the club will achieve that. Rescue needs to feature prominently so you can’t miss it.

So not sure then about domain names – we have such a long club name, its kind of annoying.

maybe.

I quite like (and perhaps a ‘history’ amd ‘code of ethics’ page should be added to what I’ve got below, similar to what the Golden club have done.)

I like the cleanness of this page, the easy, consistent navigation, and the photos.

NAMC colours are Maroon/burgundy and white.

We don’t have an official logo really, we have a picture of a Malamute head but nobody really likes it. I quite like the image that is on the front of the newsletters, of the Malamute howling (haha it’s actually a photo I took of my dog and altered, but since you can’t tell whose dog it is I don’t think that matters and at least we don’t need permission to use it). I’ll talk to the committee about that anyway.

I know how stupid overseas people can be about going onto websites with ‘New Zealand’ plastered all over them and posting info/asking questions about dogs in New York, etc, so if ‘New Zealand’ could be featured prominently under the club name that’d be good.

The Northern Alaskan Malamute Club

  • Promotes the health & welfare of Alaskan Malamutes in New Zealand
  • Provides support and advice for new Malamute owners
  • Provides veterinary care, nutrition and a loving home for unwanted, neglected & abused Alaskan Malamutes
  • Promotes the sports of sledding & weightpulling - for which Malamutes were originally developed
  • Holds an event for virtually every month of the year!

The Northern Alaskan Malamute Club is a breed club with a membership of approximately 100.

The majority of our members reside North of Taupo, mostly in Auckland. The rest are spread throughout the lower North Island and the South Island. We also have several from Australia.

The club runs sled races, weightpulls, championship and open shows, ribbon parades, pack-walks, fun-days, training weekends and public demonstrations throughout the year.

The club newsletter, ‘Qimmiq Tales’ is sent out every two months to all members, and contains contact details for committee members, calendar of events, interesting articles and show and race results.

To join the club, please email

with your name and address,

and a form will be posted out to you.

(is it worth having one of those pages where you type in your details to join the club and submit? And then all the details get sent to us? Then all they’d have to do is post a cheque..)

BREED INFO

Thinking of getting an

Alaskan Malamute?

Do NOT get a Malamute puppy from a pet shop (you will run a high risk of getting a dog with disease and / or temperament problems). Be wary of newspaper advertisements unless the breeder can show you health test results, is preferably a member of the Northern Alaskan Malamute Club / Alaskan Malamute Club Inc and the New Zealand Kennel Club, and you can meet at least one parent of the puppies.

Be 100% sure you can & will share 14 years of your life with this animal.

Research the breed - read books, the internet, talk to experienced Malamute owners

If you are wanting a puppy, contact the Club secretary and enquire about any current or upcoming litters of Malamute puppies.

If you are wanting a rescue dog, go to the Malamute Rescue page of this website.

Join the club & attend some events - before as well as after your get your dog. As well as meeting people who can talk to you about the realities of livng with a Mal, you will meet many different dogs and get a feel for which lines you like the most.

ALASKAN MALAMUTE RESCUE

The Northern Alaskan Malamute Club conducts a Rescue service for unwanted, abandoned and mistreated Alaskan Malamutes through donations and fundraising by members. We endeavour to help all Malamutes, whether members of the Northern Alaskan Malamute Club and the NZKC or not.

Thinking about getting

an Alaskan Malamute?

See the <“Breed Info”> page.

Interested in adopting or fostering a rescue Malamute?

See the <“Dogs Needing Homes”> page for available dogs.

If you can help us by fostering a dog short-term until a home is found, then please call or email the Rescue Coordinator (details above).

The number of dogs available for adoption and their sex and age varies from week to week. Some of these dogs find their way into Rescue because they are no longer wanted, some had owners who did not trouble to find out about the breed first, some have been abused, others are there because of family tragedy.

Do you have an Alaskan Malamute that you need to re-home?

We have a policy of always referring dogs back to their breeders wherever possible, so if you have a phone number or address for the person who bred your dog, please contact them as well as us. If you purchased your Malamute through a pet shop contact us for advice.

We cannot pay money for dogs—if you want to sell your dog then do so through the appropriate channels. However, do be aware that the majority of people would rather pay $800—$1,000 for a brand-new puppy from a reputable breeder than $500 or even $200 for an adult dog with a questionable background and unknown behavioural problems.

All homes we adopt Rescue Malamutes to are thoroughly checked out, so there is no need to ask for money in order to secure commitment from the future owner of the dog.

If you have an emergency, a time limit, or are considering surrendering your Malamute to the pound or SPCA then please contact us first. We may be able to prevent your pet from being put to sleep.

SLEDDING WITH YOUR MALAMUTE

There’s a few articles I wrote a while back for a newsletter about how to get started running your dog in harness, we can also ask our President for some anecdotes as he’s NZ’s veteran musher. Just a basic ‘how-to’ with contacts for buying gear etc.

(Maybe this should be included in the Articles page?)

ARTICLES

Copies of interesting stuff from past newsletters and contributed articles, on training, behaviour, nutrition etc. I’ve written quite a few things on general/obedience training, behaivour etc and we have a few experts on fitness training/ sledding training and nutrition who would probably give us an article or two.
