Newfound Harbor Marine Institute Things to Bring
While the average air temperature in the Florida Keys is 80° F, temperatures can range from the low 50’s through the upper 90’s throughout the year. We recommend that you check the expected air and water temperatures online before packing to ensure that enough warm or cool weather clothing and bedding is packed for the specific dates of your trip.
Mask, fins, and snorkel
oIf you plan to purchase your own snorkeling gear, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
The faceplate of your mask must be made of tempered glass – not plastic. In the event that the faceplate breaks, tempered glass will reduce the chance that broken shards will cause injury.
A mask should fit comfortably on your face. A good way to test a mask is to place it on your face without using the strap and inhale slightly throughout your nose; if the mask stays on, it should provide an adequate seal.
A good snorkel should fit comfortably in your mouth, and a simple “J” shaped snorkel will be adequate for your NHMI field trip.
When purchasing fins, a proper fit will also ensure comfort while snorkeling. We recommend a full-footed fin rather than one with a heel strap.
A rash guard or extra t-shirt to wear while snorkeling - for additional sun protection and to prevent chaffing.Seacamp rash guards can be purchased prior to your trip at (Click on the Camp Orders tab and type in “Seacamp”), and your purchase will be mailed directly to your house.
