POLITICO: Senate overwhelmingly passes FAA reauthorization
By Heather Caygle
The Senate passed a $33 billion FAA reauthorization bill this afternoon in what lawmakers say they hope is a big step on the road toward working out a final bill with the House later this summer.
Lawmakers passed the bill (H.R. 636 ) 95-3, capping off more than two weeks of floor consideration during which the Senate added nearly 20 amendments to the bill, including provisions to beef up airport security post-Brussels. At the last minute, the bill's floor managers tried to add another 26 amendments that had been cleared by both sides - but a lone senator objected.
Work on the bill nearly came to a halt last week as lawmakers pressed for votes on their individual amendments, including Sen. Barbara Boxer's proposal to bring rest rules for cargo pilots in line with current passenger pilot regulations.
"It's a good bill. It's a result of hard-earned, collaborative effort," Sen. Bill Nelson said shortly before the vote.
Senate Commerce Chairman John Thune said he hopes today's action nudges the House to move some kind of FAA bill in the so lawmakers can get a conference agreement before the current extension expires July 15.
