Therearemanywalkingtracksthroughoutthepark.Ashareduse(walkingandcycling)tracklinksthetownofCobramtoScottsBeachandQuinnsIsland.RidealongtheriveronRiverRoadorwindthroughthemagnificentRiverRedGumforest.

Stayondesignateddirtandgravelroadswhileridingthroughtheparktohelpensureitsconservationandpreservationforfuturegenerations.

Campingandpicnicking

Dispersedcampingispermittedinmostofthepark.CampingisnotpermittedatScottsBeach.CampingispermittedatnearbyHorseshoeBendthathasaboatramp.

BigTomsBeachhasanexpansive300mbeachandplentyofflat,grassedareas.Thelowentryintothewaterheremakeslaunchingarubberdingyorcanoereallyeasy.Thecampgroundisaneasy15-­‐20minutewalkintotown.

AccessforBigTomsandneighbouringLittleTomsBeachisviaWondahStreet.FollowthetrackfurtherwestalongtherivertoreachDeadEndBeachcampground.

DeadRiverBeachisjusttothenorth-­‐westoftownalongatrackoffRacecourseRoad.TherearepicnicareastothenorthatBigTom'sandLittleTom'sBeaches(accessviaWondahStreet).

QuinnsIslandisawaterbirdhavenformedbyabendintheriverthathasbeencutoffbyScottsCreek.PedestrianaccesstotheislandisviaabridgeoffRiverRoad.Theislandhastwokilometresofdefinedwalkingtrails,alargebirdhideandbeaches.AnumberofAboriginalartefactssuchasscartrees,flinttoolsandmiddens,havebeenfoundontheisland.

Foramoreremotewildernessexperience,ventureabout16kmsouth-­‐eastofCobramtoCobrawonga Island.

Thompson'sBeach,locatednearthebridgeatthenorth-­‐easternedgeofCobram,isknownasVictoria’slargestinlandbeach.Ithaspicnicandbarbecuefacilities,akiosk,boatramps,toiletsandaplayground.MurrayWatersBoatandBikeHireoperatefromthebeach(phone-­‐58722132).

Fishing

CommonspeciesincludeGoldenPerch(YellowBelly)andMurrayCod.FreshwaterCatfishandTroutCodmaybecaughtintheMurrayRiver,butareaprotectedspeciesandmustbeimmediatelyreturnedtothewaterunharmed.TheintroducedEuropeanCarpisoftencaughtbyanglersandmustbedestroyedbylaw.

Hereyouwillseenativewildlifesuchaskangaroos,wallabies,koalasinvirtuallyuntouchedRiverRedGumforest.Kingfishers,Egretsandotherwaterbirdsareabundantinthelagoonsandbillabongsofthisnaturehaven.

History

TheareaisknowntohavebeenoccupiedbytheYortaYortalanguagespeakingpeoplepriortowhitesettlement.CharlesSturtexploredtheMurraydownstreamofthepresenttownsitein1830and,in1838,heledadrovingpartywith300headofcattlethroughthedistrict,enroutetoSouthAustralia.Cobramstationwastakenupin1845byOctaviusPhillpotts.

Astore,postofficeandschoolwereinoperationby1880andasawmillwassetupin1883.In1886localslobbiedfortheextensionoftherailwayintothearea.Hotels,businesses,aschool,adoctor,afoundry,banks,acordialfactory,stores,churchesandanewspaper-­‐hadappearedbylate1888whenthefirsttrainarrived.Therailwaysignalledthedeclineoftherivertradebutpaddlesteamerswerestillapartofthepassengerserviceintheearlydaysofthetown.Apuntservicewasestablishedin1889andthefirstbridgewasopenedin1902.

AttheendofWorldWarIItheareawasusedforamajorsoldiersettlementscheme.Moreover,Italianimmigrants,whofirstarrivedinthe1920s,begantomigrateinfargreaternumbersafter1945andtheyareasignificantpresencetothisday.
