Doctoral Program in Urban Educational Leadership

I’m a first year doctoral student in the program of Urban Educational Leadership at the University of Cincinnati. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Education in China. After working as a classroom teacher, a school counselor, and a recruiter, I decided to continue my education to broaden my impact in the field of education.I came to the Eastern Illinois University in spring, 2005 and completed my Master’s study in Educational Administration in fall, 2006. In the autumn of 2006, my experience as an intern at Charleston Middle School inspired me to apply for a doctorate program. This would allow meto develop my research interest on the Educational Leadership in the area of educational diversity. Fortunately, I was accepted in Urban Educational Leadership programat UC. This has provided me with an opportunity to expand my role as a researcher and practitioner in the education field within an urban context. So far, my sincere commitment and desire to become a specialist in educational leadershiphas been a tremendous motivation toward this academic endeavor. Moreover, after one year study in Urban Educational Program, my interests have become more focused, as I developed the following (two) primary content areas to guide my program:

Educational Leadership

My experience as a classroom teacher, a school counselor, and an administrator intern enriched my practical perspectives on school leadership. My master and doctoral studies have built a solid foundation of knowledge inEducational Leadership. Thisincludes:the completion of my master study concentrating on general Educational Administration;the five classes on Urban Educational Leadership; the project of a comparative study of Educational Leadership in the United States and in China; problem based research; and the internship in Sycamore High School/ Indian High School as a researcher.

Parental Involvement and Chinese Immigrant Students

Throughout my doctoral study, my goals related to researching the engagement of Chinese immigrant parents in their children’s learning. These include: the completion offour courses related to measurement, assessment and evaluation; seven research methodology courses; three courses related to language and culture difference; the independent study in reviewing literature related to immigrant students; the policies and program to improveimmigrant student achievement in the United States; and the internship in Sycamore High School/Indian High School in Cincinnati.

The two subject areas provide a framework for my future goals and plans. The study of Educational Leadership will support my effort to conduct my research on the specific area of Chinese Immigrant Students. I will conduct a case study of Chinese immigrant, parental engagement in a plural cultural environment (diverse school setting). As a result, I will expand my perspectives on Chinese immigrants as “a marginal group” through the hands-on research experience. The study and research experiences in the United States will help me develop a cultural sensitive perception in order to expand parental roles of immigrants in the International School in Beijing after Ireturn to China.

In my intention, throughout my doctoral studies, to remain open to any opportunities that might prove beneficial to the academic excellence of the immigrant student population. I would place no limits toward this goal. After the completion of my study, I intend to find a research job to continue studying Asian Immigrant Students’ achievement in the multicultural context. The research experience in the United States will help me to practice and improve my research skills. I will attempt tofind and raise the voicesof the Asian students, parents, and their communities in any job that I accept.When I return to China, I will continue my experience on immigrants inthe international school in Beijing.I am committed to reaching and exceeding these goals, as well as advancing the research and practice of educational leadership in China, and promoting the immigrant student achievement in China.

Internship

During the Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters of 2008-2009, I will complete nine-credit hours of the Internship requirement of the Urban Educational Leadership program. I intend to perform these hours at a secondary level public school in the Cincinnati Public School system. I will be working with the administrators, teachers, community, parents, and students, conducting a case studytoward improving Chinese Immigrant Students’ achievement in a diverse educational context.

Dissertation

Through my dissertation work, I intend to help the administrators to facilitate parents in engaging in Chinese Immigrant Students’ learning, while building a strong connection between school and Chinese communities. I will conduct observations and have interviews with Chinese immigrant parents and students. I intend to do a thorough and qualitative case study and develop positive relationships among the administrators, teachers, community, and parents, therebyimproving Chinese immigrant students’ achievement.
