Patient Support Nurse (PSN:) FullTime 1 year contract initially.
Salary - £25,000- £30,000
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse to join our core staff at the NET Patient Foundation: an innovative organisation supporting patients with neuroendocrine cancers.
The primary aim of this this post is to improve the quality of life for patients diagnosed with a neuroendocrine cancer by acting as a bridge between hospital and home and reporting on the impact of this position.
The post is both office (Warwickshire) and home based. It will also involve travel to meetings across the UK.
The Patient Support Nurse will be line managed by the Patient Support Manager.
The Patient Support Nurse must:
•have had experience as a nurse in oncology, gastroenterology or endocrinology
•be able to provide specialist and holistic advice and support
•hold a full driving licence and have access to a car
•be a self starter and have the ability to work independently
•be a reflective practitioner with a willingness to undertake training within the field of neuroendocrine tumours and be part of the UK and European NET nursing community
•be able to portray a positive image, both internally and externally, of the NET Patient Foundation, by displaying high standards of service, integrity, punctuality, politeness and professionalism.
•have well developed IT and communication skills
There are 3 main aspects associated with this role:
1- To support the regional NET Natter Groups which are being set up around the UK by volunteers and NET specialist nurses. The NET Natter groups aim to provide community supportive care to patients and their carers and/or families. Each group is shaped by regional / local needs.
The PSN will be a point of contact and support for the volunteer leaders of each of these groups and the main link between them and the NET Patient Foundation. Working with the Patient Support Manager, the PSN will promote and help coordinate the setting up of groups in regions where NET Natter Groups are still to be developed. The PSN will also run briefing sessions for volunteer leaders and will need to attend NET Natter meetings across the UK.
2-To contribute to the provision of professional clinical/emotional/practical support to patients using the free help line and email support service which has been set up.
3- To work on a research project looking at the impact a community NET nurse has on the NET patient population.

•assess and manage patient risk effectively and safely
•analyse data and information and to assess implications for individual patients
•input relevant information onto the online database in a timely manner
•communicate effectively (in bothwritten and verbal form) and have experience of presenting information to a wider audience
•work autonomously but also to have good collaborative team working skills
•prioritise workload and manage time effectively
•establish and maintain effective communication pathways and to network effectively with NET specialist nurses, NET specialists, volunteers, patients and carers andwith the key external stakeholders
•think strategically and to influence decisions
•manage conflict
About NET Patient Foundation – The NET Patient Foundation is the only charity dedicated to offering support, education and information to people affected by neuroendocrine cancers throughout the UK.
Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) are abnormal growths that arise from cells of the endocrine (hormonal) and nervous systems. NETs can be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). As an organisation we deal with the malignant NETs (neuroendocrine cancers). There are a number of types of NET, for example: GI (gastrointestinal) NETs, Lung NETs, Non-Functioning Pancreatic NETs, Functioning Pancreatic NETs (including Gastrinomas, Insulinomas, Glucagonomas, VIPomas), Multiple Endocrine Neoplasias, Phaeochromocytomas/Paragangliomas, Goblet Cell Carcinomas.
The NET Patient Foundation was formed at the start of 2006 and has Charity Commission Status. The Foundation has the following aims:
•To provide support, education and information to anyone affected by neuroendocrine cancers
•To advocate for neuroendocrine cancer patients so that they may achieve the best possible outcomes
•To encourage standardised care for all NET cancer patients
•To provide community supportive care to patients and their carers or family members
•To raise awareness of NET cancers throughout the UK
•To raise funds for clinical and translational research projects.
Our Structure – The NET Patient Foundation currently employs 4 team members: a CEO, a Project Manager a Patient Support Manager and an Operations Manager. Our office is based in the Warwickshire and we operate across the UK.
The NET Patient Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees which supports the organisation with governance decisions. The Board of Trustees consists of six independent individuals with a range of skills and competencies across key sectors.
