I live in a cute and loving family where I receive full love and patience from my parents. I was very grateful for what I had possessed and as I grew much older, I began to ponder on what I could do to give back to the society. I felt it an obligation to do what I could for others. Therefore, I signed up for a voluntary program last winter vacation. We were divided into groups and our main purpose was to teach children in Olango, an island situated in South East Asia. The preparation prior to the teaching program was not easy, for we had to find teaching materials by ourselves and revised them into tutorials which were suitable for the children there to learn. However, it was actually pretty touching when I found myself standing in front of a bunch of students and imparting knowledge to them. We taught them some vocabulary and taught them the importance of environmental protection of their environment. The experience was memorable!
It dawned on me that some serious issues needed to be solved after this program. There are places in the world that are in really bad living condition, especially in those impoverished countries. I sincerely hope that people from developed countries can raise more awareness toward this problem and that we can join hands to make the globe a better place. Personally, I find it very rewarding to help others to learn, regardless of their race. In fact, I don’t even consider it a barrier as long as we have the will to appreciate and to give. I love the feeling of helping others to learn. It makes me happy when seeing their progress and it fulfills my spiritual life as well. Therefore, if I were granted the opportunity to be a volunteer next time, by all means will I say yes joyfully.

I’ve been practicing juggling since I was 9. To me, juggling is just as easy and normal as riding a bike. With the assist of the advancing technology, I am able to learn new moves and drills by watching some of the most celebrated jugglers around the world. Though performing these routines can bring joy and applause, it seemed to be hard to actually draw people closer to juggling and show them how natural it can be. Tired of just showing off the same old trick repeatedly. I was triggered to start a juggling teaching session for some of my friends. Despite the fact that I’m familiar with all these drills for years, to actually explain the mechanic behind these flashy movements seemed to be way more complicated than I’ve expected. From demonstrating the correct way to catch a ball, the use of the wrist to toss a ball straight up, to breaking down the complex rotation of the three balls, I started to notice all the details and fundamentals that were essential yet so natural to me that I never really pay attention to. It took months of practice before most of my friends understand the rhythm of juggling. Nevertheless, once they all caught the swish they improved in unimaginable speed. Juggling is now no longer a beautiful art I can only share with myself. Through practicing together, I seemed to rediscover the joy it brought.
Through this experience, I understand that by sharing your skills and knowledge with one another, not only can you spread the excitement behind to others, it can also be a opportunity to truely understand something you thought you know all about. NBA future hall of famer Kobe Bryant once shared his opinion on playing with high school kids. Regardless of playing in the league for almost twenty years, he believe that there’s always something out there he can learn from kids. Even summer, he join some rational high school elite players in training. By sharing some of his experience to the youngsters, he can rethink about his games and moves, and forever improving. Like people always say,“Blowing out others candle won’t make yours shine any brighter.” Kindle others through teaching and light up the world for others and ourselves.

I was once helped by my one of my classmate when I was in high school. Having great interest in biology, I really studied hard to have good command of the theories. However, when it comes to the techniques of conducting experiments in a laboratory, I didn’t have the competence in making it perfect. Hopefully, my classmate James, being excellent in the field, knew my problems and said that he would instruct me to enhance my ability in experiments. For numerous hours after school and during holidays, James taught how to use microscopes, the ways to analyze data, the importance of finding out distinct features of different organisms, and so on. He patiently led me in doing basic but essential experiments and even encouraged me to make a research about an unique creature I’d been curious about for a long period of time. At last, I successfully regained my confidence in the practical side of biology and won an award in the scientific exhibition for my studies.
This experience has brought me many feelings since I really learned a lot during the whole process. First of all, not until I entered the lab and conducted experiments did I realized that there is big gap between textbooks of theories and the real practice. I could easily grasp the idea the books try to infer and do well in theoretical tests, but that didn’t mean I was great in confronting practical problems, and it was just the real side of biology. Also, the kind heart of James touched me a lot and he wanted to help me just because his affection in the subject. Most of us might feel upset when we find others doing better in the same field, not to mention reaching out a helping hand to make others better. But James didn’t mind it at all but just hoping that I could enhance my skills to his level. This deed made me felt warm and I finally knew that it was just how real competent people might act. All in all, having received James’ help to pass the ordeal, I hope I could someday reach my hand to others too with the same simple reason and passion.

It never occurred to me how demanding it was to educate a child, or let’s say, simply keeping a child from bumping around and damaging things. I finally had a taste for it when I signed up for “ The Greenlights plan,” which aimed at teaching some elementary schoolchildren after class. The place was set in a church and those kids, who often came from shattered families, were low achievers in academic performance and were not willing to learn. I was assigned to teach Jimmy, a fifth-grade student who excelled in sports, mathematics and Chinese. At first, I expected myself being a gentle tutor, yet as time went by, my passion faded and I did not see any possibility of leading him to the wonderland of knowledge and words. For weeks, I felt frustrated and was even reluctant to face Jimmy. And one day, when he was again hoofing around and I was lost in my trance, he patted my shoulders. “It’s my fault. You are good enough,” he comforted me, “but don’t worry, I’ll be okay.” I literally have tears formed around the corner of my eyes.
I think I was the one who was educated in this session. I learned about patience, about tolerance, but most important of all, about loving someone and demanded nothing in return. Despite the fact that I failed my task and we had departed, he remained the sparking star in my heart. I came to understand that life has its own way, and there are things in life that cannot be denied, such as the beauty human nature.

I watched helplessly as the yarn tangled up in my hands for the fifth time. Feeling frustrated as ever, I slumped down on my desk and let out a depressed sigh. My best friend Stephanie walked over and asked curiously,” What’s wrong?” I slowly lifted my head and informed her that since my mother’s birthday was around the corner, I wanted to knit a scarf for her. Sadly, it seemed like I got no talent at all. She laughed and picked up the yarn, saying, ”Don’t worry I can teach you.’’ Hope rised in my heart as I sat up and started learning. I watch in awe as she smoothly knit the yarn together and slowly formed the shape of a scarf. She pulled my hands over and repeated the steps a few times with her hands holding my. To my astonishment, the scarf went out just the way I wished it would! Stephanie smiled and let me finish the scarf with my own hands. “You can do it as long as you’re gotten enough patience.” She said cheerfully.
I gradually realized that I wasn’t incapable of making the scarf. However, I was in such a hurry to get it done that all the yarn tangled with each other and became a disaster. After Stephanie’s teaching and assistance, I successfully finished the scarf for my mother. From this experience, I learned that, with patience, we can achieve numerous things we once thought we couldn’t. With patience, we can push ourselves through obstacles we once thought were too difficult to break through.

Two years ago, I was unwilling to volunteer in the hospital. However, my mom forced me to do so, hoping me the cultivate an ability to help others. With laziness and reluctance, I felt like dying while I was just sweeping the floor the floor. Out of a sudden, I caught a glimpse of a bald and skinny boy sitting weakly in the bed. In his room stood a nurse injecting drugs into his body. I then realized that he was an cancer invalid who was receiving chemotherapy. As the nurse left, I knocked the door and went it politely. Out of curiosity, I started to chat with him, and, of course, the main topic is how he thought about the cancer. To my astonishment, he said“Cancer is nothing but a pair of glasses which allows me to appreciate the world from different prospectives.’’ He became more optimistic and grasped a lot of profundities of lives. In addition, I learned a lesson.
How can I cherish my life? Healthy as I was, I kept whining all day long while doing my homework, chores, or helping others. In contrast, the boy with cancer had an iron will to survive. I couldn’t even see a trace of fear in his eyes. In addition, he profoundly know how lives should be utilized instead of being a smartphone addict and kept playing games on cellphones as I did. It is absolutely a waste of time! After the conversation with the brave little boy, I started to meditate what my life should be like. As he was bravely fighting against death demons, I had to do something more meaningful. Therefore, considering I was a student, the first priority is studies. I get to do my studies well instead of indulging myself in virtual games. After that, I’ll help those people who have cancer, telling them the story of the boy, encouraging them.

Climbing a mountain has long been my dream. Standing on top of the mountain, looking around everything beneath us would be a fascinating experience. However, in order to fulfill my dream, I need to learn more about mountain climbing skills. That’s why I met Coach Lee. He is a seasoned mountain climber. He taught me both climbing and surviving skills. He also taught me how to react when I encounter wildlife, such as Formosan Black Bear. After three months of training, we finally set our mission to climb Hehuan Mountain, which is at roughly 3000 meters altitude. During the climbing task, we faced with many obstacles, such as harsh weather conditions and mountain illness. However, Coach Lee just taught us what to do to weather those difficulties. Fortunately, we ended up living up to our goal to reach the mountain peak.
Living in a world with seven billion people, challenges seem inevitable in our daily life. Since we can’t escape from them, learning to face them is important for most of us. Rather than flinching from those difficulties, we can take more positive measures, like asking for other’s assistance. Take my mountain climbing experience for example, it is almost impossible for me, a seventeen-year-old girl to climb such a lofty mountain alone. But with the help of Coach Lee, I successfully fulfilled my dream and learned many climbing skills. We don’t have to be born strongest or most intelligence; However, we can gain knowledge from others and get stronger for the next trial. Therefore, I contend that only those who are willing to learn from others can they turn the stumbling blocks into the stepping stones!

Intoxicated in the warmth of music, I was dreamimg one day I could play guitar and stand on the stage too! To quench my thirst for playing guitar, I turned to my music teacher―Mr. Lin, who was a talented guitar player and was the leader of an indie band. First, he taught me basic skills such as playing C chord. Receiving these radical skills, all I had to do was permanently practicing. Under the guidance of Mr. Lin, I progressed by leaps and bounds. One day, he told me the touching of the music didn’t lie in perfect skills but in the feelings deep from my heart. From then on, I focused on what I felt in music instead of constantly polishing my skills. Mr. Lin not only improved my skills but also helped me surmount the adversities
From this experience, I learned that it needs a lot of patience to be a good teacher to help students master a skill. What’s more important, teachers should stimulate students’ imaginations and creativities instead of always giving them knowledge. It’s Mr. Lin that helped me think independently and let music strike a deep chord with me. Grateful for him, I would pass this passion of music to my students in the near future!

Even to this day, I still benefit from riding a bike so much, soaring through alleys or wobbling idly in boulevards. It is my bike that has accompanied me on my way to and from school all these years, which is also why I cannot helped feeling a great deal of gratitude to my grandma, who taught me how bike, every time I am on it. Being a kid back in the days, I would get envious of those teenagers who roam around the streets so freely on their bicycles. Then, one day, my grandma decided that it was time that she had introduced me to it. At first, I was euphoric as well as anxious, excited about finally getting the chance but worried about the pain from falling. As I had expected, the learning process wasn’t pleasant, as I kept losing balance and hurting myself. Fortunately, Grandma was there beside me all along, giving me encouragement along with the momentum spurred me on to try harder. She would patiently help me get up, dust away the dirt on my pants and wipe away my tears. Ultimately, I managed to take control over it in a week.
