HOLT HIGH SCHOOL LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships included in this packet are available to Holt High School Students who are members of this year’s graduating class and have applied to a post secondary educational or training institution.
Please complete the attached application form and return it to the counseling center along with:
1. Three letters of recommendation. At least one letter should come from a Holt High School faculty member and at least one letter should come from someone who is not a faculty member whom you know from such sources as a church, a volunteer service agency, or a place of business. Please do not include letters from relatives.
2. A personal essay. The essay must be typed and should address your future goals and how they relate to the need for further education, what course of study you plan to pursue and why, what your time at Holt High School has meant to you, how you see yourself making a difference in the lives of others, your financial situation and why you need financial aid to go to college, any special circumstances that would make financial aid helpful, and anything else you would like to share with the persons who will be selecting the scholarship winners. Several of the scholarships ask for examples of citizenship, leadership, and community service.
3. Please read the descriptions of the scholarships that you are applying for very carefully. Some scholarships require an additional essay.
If you are selected to participate in an interview for one of the scholarships, it would be to your advantage to learn about the organization that is providing the scholarship. This shows that you are interested in your community.

All students should contact the financial aid office of any college they plan on attending. Most financial aid typically comes through these college financial aid offices.
The dates that winners of the Holt High School Local Scholarships will be announced will vary, but will likely be in late April or early May. All winners will be listed in the commencement program.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY UNIT # 238 HOLT SCHOLARSHIP
The members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #238 would like to assist a local female student in pursuing her educational goals. They are offering a $500 scholarship to a senior at Holt High School who has applied to a secondary educational or training institution. Criteria for selection for this scholarship will include citizenship, leadership, academic record, and service to school and community. Each applicant must include a 400-500-word essay on “Freedom isn’t free…how would you explain this” or “What would you do to make our economy better”. Also provide a list of community service you participated in during the last 3 years and what your college plans are at this time. Please include this on a separate page along with you’re your personal essay and your Holt High School Local Scholarship Application.
CHI EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP
Selection: A committee comprised of three members of the Holt Board of Education Curriculum Committee will make the final selection with possible consultation with staff members of Holt High School. An interview may be required. Procedure for Making Award: The student will be awarded $2,000 upon receipt from student of proof of acceptance for enrollment at a post-secondary educational institution
CRAIG ANDERSON/ TAYLYR COCHRAN STUDENT- ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP
Every year, two scholarships are given to Holt Student-Athletes in memory of former baseball player #25 Taylyr Cochran and Craig Anderson, the proud father of three Holt alumni. The scholarships are $4,000 in total and made payable to the university or college attended by the recipient. Each annual $1,000 check is given to the scholar at our summer golf outing in July at Timber Ridge in East Lansing, MI.
Applicants must be a Holt student-athlete and submit:
· 2 page letter of purpose
· 2 letters of recommendation (one from a teacher and one from a coach)
· Proof of Varsity Letter earned.
ESTES-LEADLEY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
Estes-Leadley Funeral Home will award a $500 college scholarship. Consideration for the scholarship will be grades, community involvement, and extra-curricular activities. If the student majors in Mortuary Science, an additional $500 will be added to the scholarship.
Criteria consist of, but are not limited to the following:
· Preference will be given to anyone majoring in Mortuary Science.
· Student should be goal oriented, with some definite plans for the future.
· Preference will be given to those applicants who are community minded.
· Preference will be given to those applicants in need of financial assistance.
HHS ART CLUB HAUNTED HOUSE SCHOLARSHIP
The HHS Art Club Haunted House program is proud to provide a deserving senior with a scholarship to help them with their post-secondary education. This is the first year the HHS Art Club Haunted House scholarshipwill be given. There will be one $500 scholarships given. The money must be used for post-secondary education, but not required to be used for tuition.
Criteria:
· Short essay outlining how the Haunted House project has impacted them and their plans for the scholarship money.
· Must have participated at least 3 years in Art Club Haunted House.
· Must show citizenship by being active in giving back to the community.
· Must show leadership both in and out of school.
HOLT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION FUTURE EDUCATOR AWARD
This scholarship amounts to $500 on a one-year basis.
Criteria: Applicant must be planning to pursue a career in the field of K-12 public education. Applicant must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be attending an educational institution in the fall of 2017.
HOLT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship amounts to $500 on a one-year basis.
Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating from Holt High School and an active Holt Educational Association Member in good standing. Applicant must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and attending an educational institution in the fall of 2017.
HOLT-DIMONDALE SCHOOL BUSINESS ALLIANCE RON VANERMEN SCHOLARSHIP
The Holt-Dimondale School Business Alliance was established in 1988. It was created to support the promotion, development and support of the local communities. Specifically the development and growth of local business, housing, public education and other societal aspects.
In 1993 the Alliance established an annual scholarship for one graduating senior. The scholarship was renamed in 1994, in memory of Ronald VanErmen, an Assistant Superintendent of Holt School System, who was instrumental in organizing the Alliance as a meaningful way of bridging the gap between local business, education and government. The scholarship is awarded each year by the Holt Alliance and the VanErmen family.
Criteria: Consideration will be given to all students no matter what course of study they may pursue in a college program. Academic achievement will be evaluated based upon, but not limited to, issues of personal growth, academic record and class rank. Applicants should show evidence of service to school, community and/or work experiences. The recipient must have financial need in a post-secondary program of study. When selected for an interview, applicants will be expected to bring documentation that validates their need for financial assistance to attend college. Examples might be of a copy of the family income tax return or a copy of their FAFSA and SAR. Applicants will also be asked to reveal what other financial aid has already been awarded to them. We are looking for students who might not be able to afford a college education if it were not for this scholarship.
Selection: A committee comprised of Alliance members will make the final selection.
Procedure for Making Award: The members of the selection committee will notify the recipient personally. A minimum of one (1) student will be awarded $1,000, upon receipt from students of proof of acceptance for enrollment at a post-secondary institution. Payment will be made directly to the school you have selected and it must be used within 2 years of award. The Business Alliance honors the student at their May breakfast meeting.
HOLT JR. RAMS FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP
The Jr. Rams Football Program is proud to provide this scholarship opportunity for a student who has participated in our program, has exceptional leadership skills and shows a commitment to our community. There will be one $500 scholarships given this year. The money must be used for post-secondary education, but not required to be used for tuition.
Application criteria:
· Short essay outlining their qualifications and their plans for the scholarship money.
· Must have played at least 3 years in the Jr. Rams Football program.
· Must show citizenship by being active in giving back to the community.
· Must show scholarship by showing a commitment to the learning process.
· Must show leadership both in and out of school.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY- BLOOD DRIVE SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: This scholarship is only open to NHS members in good standing.
HORIZON ELEMENTARY SCHOLARSHIP
This $200 scholarship is intended to support a graduating senior that attended Horizon Elementary in pursuit of a post high school educational experience. To apply, please complete a written response to this prompt:
Share a memory of Horizon Elementary and the influence the staff had on your educational career. (Essays should be no longer than 5 double-spaced typed pages long and should be submitted to the Horizon office by 3:00pm on May 19, 2017)
Selection: A committee comprised of current Horizon faculty members will make the final selection based on a combination of factors: need and quality of essay.
SARAH J. CRYSLER SCHOLARSHIP
Established May 1, 1967, by a provision in the will of Clifford W. Crysler. Mr. Crysler set up a trust, the net annual income from which is to go as a one-time award to a graduating senior of Holt High School or its successor school.
This is established in memory of Sarah J. Crysler, wife of Clifford W. Crysler, who died in the 1960’s. Mrs. Crysler at one time taught school at Eden. She was the former Sarah Ellis and lived in the Holt area. Mr. Crysler, who for more than 20 years operated the Holt Variety Store, died in June, 1965. This Scholarship is to assist a deserving student with their expenses while attending a college or university of their choice. Spendable endowment earnings will be awarded to a Holt High School graduate as recommended by Holt High School personnel. This year’s award will be approximately $600.
