Professional Biography

Dr. Hammer did his university training at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin. He attended medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago, from which he graduated with honors. Dr. Hammer completed residency training in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California and in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He received fellowship training in pediatric anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He served as the Director of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Anesthesia at California Pacific Medical Center from 1988 until 1995, when he was recruited to join the faculty at Stanford University. He is Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Director of Pediatric Anesthesia Research in the Department of Anesthesia at Stanford, and Associate Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford.

Dr. Hammer has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, has lectured at numerous national and international meetings and has been a Visiting Professor on more than 20 occasions at universities around the world. Dr. Hammer has been the principle investigator on more than 15 grants. He is currently funded by a large grant from the National Institutes of Health. His primary area of research interest is in pediatric pharmacology.
