JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Peripatetic Music Teacher (Clarinet)
Responsible to: Director of Music and Performing Arts
Tuition in individual instruments, including voice, is given by visiting teachers who have self-employed status in the school. They have a contract with each pupil’s parents and are responsible for invoicing and collecting their own fees. The music teachers, as a group, agree the fee level for the coming academic year in time for this to be notified a term in advance to the parents.
The school makes teaching facilities available to the visiting teachers for a nominal peppercorn rent (currently £1.75 per pupil, per term). Staff are paid an hourly rate for taking ensembles and invoice the school termly for this service.
All visiting teachers are subject to a Protection of Children check in the same way as other members of staff.
GUIDELINES FOR VISITING STAFF
Music lessons are given in three ten-week terms that do not coincide with school terms except at the beginning of the school year in September. Teachers are responsible for billing their own pupils at the beginning of each ten-week period. The rates for fees for each year are agreed by all visiting staff late in the spring term for the following year.
The fee for individual music lessons for the academic year 2016 – 2017 is £33 per hour (pro rata).
A term of 10 lessons will therefore cost the following:
20 minutes = £110 30 minutes = £165 40 minutes = £220
If a teacher is absent he/she must either make up the lessons missed or extend the ten-week term to cover them as necessary. At the end of the school year there are normally 3 or 4 ‘spare’ weeks to allow for this. Pupils who have received thirty lessons before the end of the school year may be offered additional lessons pro rata at the teacher’s discretion.
In general, lessons missed by pupils should be charged for unless a few days notice has been given. This information is available in the Performing Arts brochure given to all pupils.
All music lessons are time-tabled by the peripatetic staff. At Keystage 3, girls should not miss the same academic lesson more than twice a term. At Keystage 4 lessons are given in non-curricular time i.e. before or after school or during the lunch break. Sixth-form lessons are given in study periods
If a pupil is absent visiting staff should telephone reception. If the girl is in school she can be contacted and reminded of her lesson.
Staff are requested to keep the rooms tidy.
Where a pupil is hiring a school instrument the visiting teacher is responsible for informing the DoMPA. A list of girls hiring instruments is then collated and passed to the Bursar’s Office so that the fee can be added to the termly bill. The DoMPA should also be informed of any repairs that are necessary.
An Associated Board examination session is arranged each term by Andrea Higgins. Each teacher is responsible for completing their own entry form and collecting entry fees from their pupils. The time of examinations should then be given to Andrea Higgins who will collate the full school entry. Teachers will generally be expected to accompany their own pupils but if this is not possible or appropriate they are responsible for arranging for someone else to do so. Mr Tavener and Mrs Higgins are available to act as examination accompanists. There is a scale of fees to be charged for accompanying. The school pays for one rehearsal with the accompanist and for the examination.
Good communication with parents is an essential part of instrumental teaching. It is strongly recommended that reports on each pupil’s progress are sent home along with school reports but if there are matters of concern in the meanwhile a letter or phone call will often help avoid later conflict. It is a good idea to have a record of the telephone numbers of the parents in case of need.

RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC TO THIS POST
We are seeking someone to teach clarinet to pupils in both our senior and junior school, ranging from beginners to higher ABRSM grades.
The post holder must work in accordance with the aims and policies of the school. All members of staff are required to familiarise themselves with the contents of the Peripatetic Staff Handbook and to abide by the codes of practice it contains.
