Mr. Marino
English IV
"Don't you know that you're my HERO..."
(An essay that, hopefully, never uses any part of the above quoted song.)
To get the mental juices flowing:
What is a hero today? We hear the word used so often that we know that they must exist somewhere, but who are they? Are sports figures heroes? Are philanthropists, actors, musicians, or politicians heroes? Can we find them in the armed forces or with the Red Cross or with any humanitarian organization, all of whom risk their lives daily? Think about it.
The prompt:
In this essay, you will first define what you believe a "hero" entails. Once you do this, you will identify someone who exemplifies this and also explain, using examples and clear explanations, how they fit this image. Here is how you need to organize the essay:
Introduction paragraph: You should use a grabber (an anecdote, etc.) and then define the term hero for your reader. You need to identify three traits/ characteristics that a hero has. Then identify the person who fits this description.
Body Paragraphs: In each body paragraph, explain one of the three heroic traits in detail and citea specific example that shows how your hero possesses this trait.
Conclusion: Summarize and drive home your ideas to the reader; make a thoughtful observation on the whole concept..
Other Details:
- Please follow standard MLA format with all of your writing in this class, which briefly means:
- Double-spaced
- No extra spaces between paragraphs
- 11/2" margins all around
- We will edit in class and perhaps engage in small discussion groups about your findings.
- If you need my help, advice, anecdotal fervor, or melodic song-voice, please arrange to meet with me.
Good Luck!
