Possible hazards to consider:

These are examples only and do not include every possible hazard for your event. It is your responsibility to ensure you have undertaken a full risk assessment of all your activities, the location, the people attending and the equipment you will be using.

Think about hazards to:

  • Your guests
  • Members of the public – walkers, dogs, cyclists, horse riders
  • Structures – temporary & permanent
  • Natural objects – ground, trees, vegetation, waterways
  • Structures – erection & dismantling, location, wind/weather conditions, guy lines, tent pegs
  • Weather – wind, sun, thunderstorms, severe cold, severe heat – effect on structures, people, food, trees, equipment
  • Natural objects – trees, underfoot conditions (slippery, trip hazards, ruts & holes), branches at eye level,
  • Vehicles on site – moving around, petrol, damage to the ground
  • Vehicles off site – access of public/guests to the site (crossing roads etc)
  • Electricity – location of cables, water/rain
  • Generators – training, fuel storage, location, protection from tampering
  • Flammable materials – storage, usage, disposal
  • Members of the public – unsupervised children wandering where they shouldn’t go, cyclists, horse riders
  • Dogs – yours and members of the public, uncontrolled dogs
  • Food – supply, preparation, storage
  • Litter – dangerous eg. glass, litter blowing around, collection & disposal of litter
  • Sharps – finding needles etc.
  • Alcohol on site – litter, drunk people
  • Your visitors– abusive, drunk, drugs, lost children
  • Emergencies – suspicious package, communication, procedures, site evacuation
  • Fire – evacuation procedures, fire-fighting equipment, fire warden training, fire policy
  • First aid – who? where?
  • Rides/inflatables – correct paperwork, suitable location, supervised by a member of staff from the providing company
  • Waterways – rivers, ponds, lakes – preventing access, safety equipment, rescue, flooding
  • Equipment – hand & power tools, generators
  • Crossing public footpaths – signs? marshals?
  • Activities – warning signs, supervision, equipment

There will be more! This list is only to give you an idea of things to think about, not an exhaustive list of all possible hazards. Look at the Health & Safety Executive website for further assistance.

Risk Assessment
Calculation Guide
NOTE: Risk Factor = Severity x Likelihood / Severity / Likelihood / Risk Factor / Risk Category / Action guideline
1 = Minor (<3 days off work) / 1 = unlikely to occur / 1 – 3 / Low / Maintain control measures
2 = Moderate (>3 off work) / 2 = likely to occur / 4 – 6 / Medium / Review control measures
3 = Serious Harm (death or major injury) / 3 = very likely to occur / 9 / High / Stop activity and improve controls
