Playing with Sounds and Rhymes- encourage saying and hearing the sounds p b m
An activity in a quiet area for a small group of children-5 maximum
What you need:
A small box or bucket ( interesting textures if possible)
An empty plastic milk bottle ( 0.5 litres) with the bottom cut on 3 sides, lined with white paper and the bottom secured with tape
A doll’s potty
A bag or box containing toys or artefacts – small world toys, finger puppets etc beginning with the same letters as the beginning sound of the containers and able to fit into the containers . If they don’t fit in – change the words of the song from ‘In ‘ to ‘on’. A variety of each P: pigs / B: bees / M: mice
If you want to limit the sound to one sound have 3 different containers beginning with same sound eg bucket, basket box or pan potty pram, milk mugs- a variety of different mugs . You can adapt this activity for different sounds.
How it works
Name each item with the children – use maketon signs and say eg milk- show maketon sign then say milk starts with the sound m and add the action eg jolly phonics if using m m m milk ( be careful to keep the sounds clear with no added u eg m m m not mu mu mu
Let the children choose an item each from the bag or large box
Name the item as the child chooses and emphasise the beginning sound eg pppp pig. Add an action for the sounds if you wish eg jolly phonics actions.
Sing the song together
To the tune of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ Encourage each child to put their toy into the suggested container
Put the pig in the potty, in the potty,
Put the pig in the potty, in the potty,
Put the pig in the potty, put the pig in the potty
Put the pig in the potty in the potty.
When each child has put something in a container introduce the song based on Cow’s in the kitchen
