2017 Application Form and Information
(APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 1, 2017)
The Ventura Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship Program is accepting applications on behalf of the Robert L. Sanford Criminal Justice Scholarship from Ventura County high school students who will be graduating in the spring of 2017. A complete package must be submitted to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, Ventura Alumni Chapter scholarship Committee no later than April 1, 2017. A $1000.00 scholarship will be awarded to the final selected candidate.
PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
This Scholarship was created in the honor of Robert L. Sanford. It is intended to offer assistance via scholarship to a high school senior with a minimum 3.00 grade point average, who is a resident of Ventura County, and has been accepted to a four year accredited College or University. This student must have declared a major in Criminal Justice or provide verifiable evidence of intent to pursue a career in the related profession.
The members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Ventura Alumni Chapter’s Scholarship Committee will make the preliminary selection of the candidate and will present the ”finalist” to the Sanford Family for final selection.
Robert L. Sanford was born in Gary, Indiana to the union of his late parents Lewis and Doxie Sanford. He was duly initiated into the Ventura Alumni Chapter in 1979. He was awarded the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of La Verne.
Robert L. Sanford embraced a life philosophy to serve the community in which he lived, and to serve his country. He served in the United States Navy for twenty one years and retired at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Robert L. Sanford was the first African American to achieve the status of parachute rigger and instructor while stationed at Lakehurst Naval Base in New Jersey. Moreover, he was the first African American to have made 64 parachute jumps.
Robert L. Sanford retired in 1992 from a second career as Senior Group Supervisor with the Ventura County Probation Department. He also received the prestigious NAACP Community Service Award. He was a model citizen and beamed with pride when he spoke of his bride Nita (Juanita) and other family members.
Robert L. Sanford was a stellar member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Ventura Alumni Chapter, and a former Polemarch (President) of the chapter. This scholarship is expressive of the high esteem in which Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. holds him and appropriately honors his memory.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTE
- Applicant must be a Ventura County high school student.
- Applicant must be a graduating student this spring 2017
- Applicant must have declared a major in criminal justice or can provide evidence of intent to pursue a career in the related field.
- Applicant must have applied for admission to at least one four year college or university for the fall of 2017school term.
- Applicant must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Applicant must provide two (2) letters of recommendation from an official of current school and community organization, church, or employer.
- Parent/Guardian approval signature is required.
ELGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
- Letter of acceptance from a University or College.
- College or University official enrollment verification.
AWARDS
The recipient of the Robert L. Sanford Criminal Justice Scholarship will be determined by the scholarship committee of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The finalist will be selected based upon the applicant meeting all eligibility requirements; submission of a one page essay on “Why Attending College is Important and Why I Want to Major in Criminal Justice” and an in-depth interview. The interview will explore five key factor areas that include Achievement, Leadership, Scholarship, Community Service and Career Ambition.

- Two essays are required for the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Ventura Alumni Chapter,Robert L. Sanford Criminal Justice Scholarship.Write a 400 word essay on each of the following topics:
- Why have you chosen Criminal Justice as your college/university major?
- What is your career goal with a degree in Criminal Justice?
- Provide certification of academic standing with an official high school transcript (transcript must have the school seal affixed)
- Submit Two (2) Letters of Recommendation: one from a school official and an individual (excluding family members).
- Provide a recent Photograph (wallet size senior is preferred).
