WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE FIELD FAIRE
Friday, February25, 2011
1:00pm – 4
University Union, Ballroom
The Field Faire is similar to a job fair. Agency representatives will be at tables in the University Union Ballroom. Many agencies will bring written materials (e.g. brochures, handouts, small displays, photos, etc.) to help students get a better idea of what opportunities are available. Students should take their time browsing from table to table, asking questions of representatives from agencies that catch their interest. It is important for students to come to the Field Faire with a very open mind regarding the types of placements available.
With over 100 agencies represented, the Field Faire can feel overwhelming to some students. Here are some ways to make the best of your time there:
1.The Field Faire is mandatory for undergraduate students planning to enter field the upcoming fall. Plan to spend 60-90 minutes at the Faire. Arrive as early as you can, since some agencies may start packing up at 3:30pm.
2.Before the Faire, think about your areas of interest. Talk to your professors (especially your current practice professor) other undergraduates in field, and ask them for ideas. Professor Jill Kelly, Director of Field Education and Professor Mimi Lewis, Undergraduate Field Coordinator, are also available to meet with you individually to discuss placement options. For particular agencies that interest you Google them to obtain information or ask to view theCommunity Services Directory published by the Community Service Planning Council in the Reference section of the library, 2nd floor.
3.You can download a list of agencies attending the Faire on our website beginning Monday, February 21. Before the Faire, take some time to do research and then highlight agencies that sound interesting. Bring the list with you to the Field Faire and plan to visit these agencies’ representatives with your prepared list of questions. Remember, you will not be signing up for a placement at the Faire …just finding out what is available.
4.The tables will be set up alphabetically, with agencies starting with the letter “A” on the right side of the Ballroom as you enter the door.
5.Feel free to ask Social Work faculty for ideas about agencies. There will also be Social Work staff available to help you locate agencies.
