Common WorkHazards / Risk Assessment Considerations
Interface with the Public / Minimise interaction with the public and others. Ensure appropriate, fencing,cones, barriers and signs are in place and maintained to segregate our works from the public and unauthorised person access.
Lone Working / Is the work you intend to do,safe while working alone? Who knows where you are? Have you a phone? Does it work? Check battery & signal strength? Do you need someone with you?Are you aware of our lone working policy?
Road Traffic / Is a traffic management plan required/available?Are traffic lights needed? Ensure signs, lighting & guarding to NRSWA standard. Is NRSWA card up to date & on site? Consider safety of pedestrians as well as traffic. Position your vehicle to minimise risk to you and your team. Always wear appropriate hi-visibility Reflective Garments.
Construction Site Hazards / Report to site office and supervisor on arrival. Obtain information on site hazards and rules, receive face-to-face briefing andmake sure you have a RAMSpack with you on site. Wear required PPE. Observe the work taking place around you / above you / below you. Willothers, at work or nearby affect your safety? Will you affect theirs?
Slip, Trips and Falls / Is the work area/sitetidy and safe? Identify obstructions and underfoot risk areas before you start. Clear up as you go. Set out the work area to avoid hazards (Eg. positioning of spoil or tools etc.) Plan how and where you walk around your work area? Don’t walk by any slip or trip hazards, sort out and correct the hazards you see.
Manual Handling Lifting Pushing & Pulling / Training up to date? Avoid MH use mechanical aids if possible. Plan the MH task and walk the route,check the ground, weight, stability, grip of the load, use correct handling techniques. Don’t be tempted to try and move items of excessive weight beyond your lifting capabilities.Have you made arrangements for lifting aids and equipment to be on site when you need them? Deliver materials as close to job as possible to reduce manual handling.
Excavations Ground Works / Do you have plans for all utilities for the area where you intend to excavate? Utility Plans may not be up to date or accurate; you must alwaysuse yourCATand Gennybefore and while you dig. Have you a PTD? Ensure suitable barriers are in place before you start digging. Will temporary works design information be required?Always consider the need for shoring and trench support where excavations have to go deeper than planned or could collapse and cause injury, have sheets/props etc available. Is or willthe excavationbecome a confined space?
Work at Height / Is it possible that you or others could fall and be injured? Can you avoid working at height? Is edge and fall protection required, if so is it available and correctly installed (handrails/barriers etc)? Scaffolds may only be constructed and altered by trained persons. Check inspection tags are in date before using ladders or scaffold. Are laddersproperly secured? Safety harnesses must only be used as a least resort and only if you have been trained to inspect and use them& alsobeen trained to rescue and recover persons who have fallen while wearing a harness.
Work with Electricity / You must be trained and authorised in writing to work with and on electricity Systems and Networks. Check for any operational restrictions applicable to the location you are working at or equipment you are working on or operating. Adhere toDistribution Safety Rules, relevant codes of practice, manuals and instructions. Ensure insulated tools and gloves are in good condition, undamaged in date. Make sure that work is planned and live parts are adequately screened or shrouded. Comply with Carillion LV Rules.
Hazardous Substances / Ensure you know the hazards and the necessary precautions to use, store and dispose of hazardous substances safely. Make sure you have a COSHH information sheet and the correct PPE available and that you understand any emergency and first aid requirements.
Inhalation of Dust or Fumes / EXHAUST FUMES & GASES- position source away from point of work. Don’t usecombustion engines in buildings, excavations or confined spaces. Other FUMES/GASESstopseek adviceand instructions. DUST- Eliminate/reduce exposure where possible, damp down &use the correct type of dust mask where necessary.
Lifting Operations / Are you trained, card/certificate holder for lifting operations? Make sure, you/your team have a lifting plan.
Asbestos / Where Asbestos is suspected do not start work, contact your supervisor for instructions.
Tools, WorkEquipment Plant / Ensure you have been trained to use the tools, equipment and plant provided. Hold an approved plant card to drive & operate plant. Ensure tools & equipment are maintained, undamaged and in good condition. Check tool and extension lead insulation & PAT test dates. Observe any special precautions required and wear all relevant PPE. Are tools, plant & equipment secured/immobilised when not in use?
Fire/Explosion / When using naked flame or cut off disks, angle grinders etc, for work ensure no flammable substances are nearby. All ‘open flame’ work requires a hot work permit. No smoking when flammable substances are being handled or in use. Wear correct work wear and PPE. Have suitable fire extinguisher available for emergencies. Check gas equipment and connections are in good condition with no leaks. No bonfires on our projects.
Noise/Vibration / Is the work place noisy? Can you hear a normal conversation? Protect your ears in noisy environments with appropriate earmuffs or plugs. Can you get noisy equipment switched off? Is the equipment you use causing significant levels of vibration? If yes inform your supervisor and make sure you know how long you may use the vibrating hand held equipment and make sure you keep your hands warm, always wear gloves.
Environment / Will the weather affect our work activities? Are liquids in correct containers, labelled & bunded? Are fuel browsers locked? Working in SSSIs or other ecological areas do you have clear instructions? Is there a possibility that silt may run-off into drains and watercourses? Are we working near controlled water? Will we cause anuisance, dust/noise etc, affecting people near by? Dispose of waste correctly; place waste in the correct skip. Seek guidance from your supervisor if you are not sure what to do with the waste you create.
