TMS Computer Class Syllabus

6th Grade

Ms. Ayers

Overview

6th grade computer class is a semester course that focuses on introducing and reinforcing basic computer skills, including keyboarding, word- processing, digital citizenship and research skills.

Skills will be taught that align with the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) as well as Oregon’s Standards (OETS), which are very similar to the NETS. Emphasis will be placed on connecting technology to the Common Core standards.

Basic operations: students will demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers & applications. They will be able to navigate their drives, both physical and cloud-based, and will be able to access their course information on Schoology and Google Classroom, our learning management systems.

Keyboarding: students will learn proper keyboarding form, focusing on accuracy first, then speed. A web-based program and keyboarding games will be used to help practice touch-typing.

Word-processing: students will learn how to clearly and effectively communicate using a variety of tools (primarily Google Docs)

Research/information literacy: students will select and apply digital tools to help them gather, evaluate, validate and use information. Proper and efficient use of search tools will be covered. This section will also include use of Google Earth as a means to both collect and present information.

Digital Citizenship: students will learn proper online etiquette, how to protect themselves while online, how to properly use information found online, and more through materials created by Common Sense Media.

Presentations: Students will learn the basics of digital presentations using Google Slides to create products that communicate information clearly and effectively.

Programming: Students will be introduced to basic programming concepts using the program Scratch from MIT.

Grading

The state of Oregon is currently moving toward proficiency-based grading. What this means for you and your child is that grades will be based on meeting a standard. Anything that is not part of a standards-based assessment, such as work-habits or classroom behavior, will be assessed in a separate citizenship grade. Academic grades will fall into two categories:

Formative: skills practice, daily assignments that reflect skills progress, etc. This will be worth 40% of your overall grade.

Summative: any work that demonstrates proficiency in one or more standards. There will be two to three of these each quarter. Summative assessments are worth 60% of your final grade.

Homework

Whenever possible, students are encouraged to complete assignments from home, and to use the tools available whenever possible. However, because not all students have access to computers and/or the internet, there are no formal homework assignments at this time.
