UNIT: Introduction to International Trade


Annotation:

This unit teaches the basics of international trade. This is a self-contained unit complete with student information guides, study guides, exams, etc. These Student Information Guides include definitions of terms used in the international trade market, descriptions of international trade organizations, and the meaning of globalization in an international market.

This unit is appropriate for use by substitute teachers in CTAE classrooms. The unit requires minimal technical understanding by the substitute teacher.

Students with Disabilities:


For students with disabilities, the instructor should refer to the student's IEP to be sure that the accommodations specified are being provided. Instructors should also familiarize themselves with the provisions of Behavior Intervention Plans that may be part of a student's IEP. Frequent consultation with a student's special education instructor will be beneficial in providing appropriate differentiation.

Enduring Understandings:

International trade serves as an important way to connect countries and cultures across the globe through the sharing of goods, services, and information. Many rules, regulations, and negotiations are necessary for international trade to remain efficient for each participating country.

• How does the implementation of international trade organizations affect the global market?

• Is globalization beneficial or detrimental to our expanding world?

LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL TRADE

1. Identify the standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom.

2.  Review Essential Question(s). Post Essential Question(s) in the classroom.

• Why do countries need to participate in international trade?

• How does international trade affect consumers’ daily lives?

3.  Ask students to get out a sheet of paper and pencil.

• Ask students to list ten items they own that were made in another country.

• Ask students to list items they own that were made in the U.S.

• Discuss the relative volume of U.S. vs. foreign made goods with the students.

4. Provide each student the Introduction to International Trade Student Information Guide along with the corresponding Introduction to International Trade Study Guide. (They may work alone or in groups, at the teacher’s discretion.)

5. Ask the students to read the information guide and complete the study guide.

6. Collect the completed study guides. Collect the Student Information Guides for future use.

7.  Use the Introduction to International Trade Study Guide Key to review the study guide with the class.

8.  Summarize the lesson for the students. Ask students to state one thing that they have learned from this lesson.

• LESSON 2: INTERNATIONAL TRADE ORGANIZATIONS

6.  Use the International Trade Organizations Study Guide Key to review the study guide with the class.

• LESSON 3: GLOBALIZATION IN AN INTERNATIONAL MARKET

8.  Use the Globalization in an International Market Study Guide Key to review the study guide with the class.

9.  Summarize the lesson for the students. Ask students to state one thing that they have learned from this lesson.

10.  Exam: The unit exam does not cover specifically lesson four. It is appropriate to give the Introduction to International Trade Test now, after lesson three, or after lesson four.

• LESSON 4: EMBARGO DEBATE

1. Identify the standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom.

2.  Review Essential Question(s). Post Essential Question(s) in the classroom.

3.  Debate.

• Read the directions on the Embargo Debate sheet.

• Follow the directions on the Embargo Debate sheet.

• You will be handing out the Embargo Position Sheet and the Embargo Debate Rubric to the students.

• Note that the embargo debate scenario is based on the 1980 Grain Embargo implemented by President Jimmy Carter between the U.S. and Russia.

4. Summarize the information presented in the debate and ask students to give their opinions about the scenario. Mention to the students that this scenario was based on the 1980 Grain Embargo by President Jimmy Carter between the U.S. and Russia. • LESSON 5: INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL TRADE – REVIEW ACTIVITY

1. Identify the standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom.

• NOTES & REFLECTION:

The Embargo Debate scenario is based off of the 1980s Grain Embargo implemented by President Jimmy Carter between the U.S. and Russia. The International Trade Test covers information from the Introduction to International Trade Student Information Guide, International Trade Organizations Student Information Guide, and Globalization in an International Market Student Information Guide.
