STANDARD 1

The student identifies ways to practice good citizenship.

Benchmarks:

1.1Lives responsibly;

1.1.1Follows local and state laws

1.1.2Demonstrates respect for authority

1.1.3Respects the rights of others

1.1.4Carries state ID, medical alert card, & emergency contact information

1.2Participates in local government;

1.2.1Researches important issues

1.2.2Identifies current events through varying forms of media

1.2.3Identifies local government officials that may influence your community

1.2.4Votes on an informed and regular basis

1.3Volunteers within the community;

1.3.1Active in community organizations

1.3.2Contributes to making the community better

1.4Protects the environment.

1.4.1Recycles on a systematic basis

1.4.2Puts trash in appropriate place

1.4.3Demonstrates respect for the environment

STANDARD 2

The student identifies ways to access community resources (Bank, Hospital, Recreational Centers, Youth Centers, etc…).

Benchmarks:

2.1 Locates appropriate resources;

2.1.1Identifies needed resources

2.1.2Identifieslocation of services

2.2 Follows steps to acquire services;

2.2.1Secures necessary forms and applications

2.2.2Gathers requested information, and completes forms (SSI, SSDI, RI Identification, ADA funding, etc…)

2.2.3Sends information to service provider

2.2.4Meets with service representative (BHDDH/Adult Agencies)

2.3 Uses effective transportation to access resources.

2.3.1Secures and maintains transportation services (RIDE/RIPTA, etc…)

2.3.2Identifies travel options (plane, train, automobiles)

2.3.3Determines most appropriate mode of transportation

2.3.4Uses skills to travel safely and efficiently

STANDARD 3

The student understands the importance of maintaining healthy relationships.

Benchmarks:

3.1 Compares different types of relationships;

3.1.1Interpersonal (colleagues, neighbors, etc.)

3.1.2Close (close friends, romantic, best friends)

3.1.3Family

3.1.4Group (teams, organizations, support groups, etc)

3.2 Identifies benefits and values of being in relationships;

3.2.1Joins in social opportunities

3.3 Builds and strengthens relationships;

3.3.1Demonstrates gratitude for others

3.3.2Acts in a trustworthy and dependable manner

3.3.3Communicates effectively (listens & honesty)

3.3.4Acts responsibly (cooperates & contributes)

STANDARD 5

The student understands the importance of providing leadership when appropriate.

Benchmarks:

5.1 Completes a classroom/community service learning project that benefits the community;

5.2 Demonstrates participation in both the classroom and with school wide projects/events (i.e presentation for parent night, attending afterschool functions, Best Buddies, etc…);

5.3 Demonstrates appropriate characteristics of a volunteer (help/give back to others).

STANDARD 6

The student understands the importance of financial planning and money management.

Benchmarks:

6.1 Carries money;

6.1.1Identifies money container (coin purse, wallet, or fanny pack)

6.1.2 Assists with placing money container in safe/correct place

6.1.3Locates money container when needed

6.2 Makes a purchase in a store;

6.2.1 Identifies item(s) to purchase

6.2.2 Locates item(s) to purchase

6.2.3 Removes money from money container and gives it to the clerk

6.2.4Accepts change/receipt from clerk

6.2.5 Returns change to money container

6.2.6 Accepts bag with purchased item(s)

6.2.7 Returns money container to a safe place

6.3 Makes a purchase from a vending machine;

6.3.1Identifies item to purchase

6.3.2 Locates item in vending machine

6.3.3 Removes money from money container

6.3.4 Places money in slot

6.3.5 Makes correct selection (pushes correct button or buttons)

6.3.6 Removes item from machine

6.3.7 Checks for change

6.3.8 Returns change to money container

6.3.9 Replaces money container to a safe place.

6.4 Identifies check;

6.4.1Endorses a check (Turns check over, locates box for name stamp/signature, places name stamp over box or signs, pushes down stamp).

6.5 Uses debit card to make purchase;

6.5.1Retrieves debit card

6.5.2Swipes debit card correctly

6.5.3 Enters numeric pin correctly.

6.6 Demonstrates an awareness of Social Security benefits.

6.6.1 Meets with a social security benefits specialist

STANDARD 7

The student demonstrates understanding of practicing safety.

Benchmarks:

7.1 Compares safe and unsafe environments;

7.1.1Identifies support people (police officer, nurse, teacher, supervisor)

7.1.2Identifies the risks of strangers, dangerous situations, and dangerous surroundings (ex. Parking lots)

7.2 Expresses personal boundaries.

7.2.1Communicates own personal space

7.2.2 Displays appropriate greetings for different relationships.

7.2.3 Communicates "no" in uncomfortable situations.

STANDARD 8

The student is involved in youth and/or adult social, recreational, and health activities.

Benchmarks:

8.1 Selects leisure activities that are of personal interest;(Hobbies, Entertainment, Recreation, Exercises and fitness, Sports)

8.1.1Does research on various forms of leisure

8.1.2Identify recreational preferences

8.2 Evaluates the benefits of using leisure time;

8.2.1Produces a list of benefits

8.2. 2Identifies stress reducing activities (Promotes emotional well-being)

8.2.3Investigates new hobbies

8.3 Investigates places to learn about leisure activities;

8.3.1Local newspaper listings

8.3.2Libraries (bulletin boards, periodicals)

8.3.3Organizations (YMCA, clubs, church)

8.3.4Internet (search for leisure activities)

8.3.5Departments of parks and recreation

8.4 Follows steps to try various leisure activities.

8.4.1Talks to others who participate in leisure activities (phone, in person)

8.4.3Evaluates activity trial (benefits, drawbacks)

STANDARD 9

The student organizes and structures a daily schedule to prepare for engagement in the community.

Benchmarks:

9.1 Has available and maintains a date book, planner, &/or schedule;

9.1.1 Constructs a calendar of events

9.1.2 Distinguishes and choose activities for a daily schedule

9.1.3Organizes activities into daily schedule

9.2Identifies potential schedule problems and delays;

9.3Investigates solutions to problems and delays within the schedule;

9.4 Self evaluates when the day is completed.
