MORRELL’S MUSINGS

From Press Secretary, Neil Morrell

Saturday Scene - 19th October, 2013

As another week draws to a close, 'Saturday Scene' commences with news that, of fourteen of our teams who participated in the F.A. Carlsberg Vase First Round, guaranteed places in the next round were by just four following the ties that took place from Friday evening through to Saturday afternoon plus the addition of Hanworth Villa who also come into the competition next round. Round Two is due to get underway on or around the 16th November and will feature Chessington & Hook United, Dorking or Knaphill - subject to replay on 22nd October - Hanworth Villa, Hartley Wintney and South Park. In addition to these teams, Cove would be added to this list should they win their replay at home with Newhaven (Sussex County League) which takes place on Tuesday evening. From our fourteen participating clubs, you would be forgiven to think, maybe even hope, that a few more of our teams may have won through given the number we had entering this stage. Of these ties, we did have the assurance that, when the draw was made, two CCFL sides would definitely get through as Staines Lammas and South Park along with Dorking and Knaphill were paired with each other.

The Staines Lammas versus South Park (Division One against high riding Premier Division and Division One top team) should provide a highly fascinating contest. Looking at the result, which was a 5-0 victory for South Park, you get the feeling that, despite suffering a midweek defeat over at Farnham Town, there was no way this tie was going to slip away from them. Kieran Lavery got 'Park' off to a great start as he put them a goal to the good inside the opening six minutes with the first of his two for the afternoon. Pretty much in control so early, he then doubled his tally on 31 which gave the hosts rather a large hill to climb and we were only a third of the way through the tie. Chris Smith, two minutes further on, turned the hill into a mountain as he made it 3-0. So we went into the break with the visitors well in command score wise wiping away the disappointment of Tuesday night's reversal. Ever keen to build on their advantage, a fourth South Park goal arrived on 54 minutes through Karl Parker thus making the contest all but over. A fifth and final goal was added ten minutes from time, courtesy of Jack Stafford, to ensure a safer passage through than what one thought prior to start of play.

Our other all CCFL tie saw hosts Dorking and Knaphill share four goals over the 120 minute duration over at Meadowbank. First team activity returned to Meadowbank Saturday afternoon in this highly entertaining all Division One encounter only difference being it was F.A. Carlsberg Vase activity. A mere seventeen points separate these two sides League wise but, when it comes to cup football, well, that, as they say, is a different matter. All square at 0-0, The Dorking 'Chicks' finally broke the deadlock just after the hour mark and signs were looking quite promising for the home faithful amongst the 62 who were in attendance. As we know though, Knaphill, who are in the first round for the first time in their history, operate a simple theory of the game not being over ‘til the final whistle.

This simple theory again reaped benefit as, in stoppage time, Scott Todd was on hand to take the contest into extra time. In the second period of additional time, up popped Alex Lumley to then give the visitors the lead. Still though, there was at least another eleven minutes playing time left. Dorking were then rewarded during these latter stages as James Phillips once again squared the contest on 115 minutes. No winning goal secured by either side during this period so it is off to Redding Way to decide this encounter Tuesday evening with the reward of a place in the Second Round awaiting.

Safely through at the first time of asking are Chessington & Hook United following a comfortable 3-0 home victory over high riding Sussex League Division One outfit Hassocks (Sussex County League). After a goal-less opening half, Theo Woodhouse got Chalky Lane buzzing on 53 minutes, Dan Harding then added a further two home goals on 78 minutes and the second minute of added on time to wrap a very good afternoon's work for Chessy. Over at Hartley Wintney, our F.A. Cup heroes were paired with Petersfield Town (Wessex League); a club who, over the years, have become very familiar within various cup competitions. Always going to be a tough encounter this one, however, Ben Dillon got himself on the score-sheet as early as the second minute. However, this lead lasted barely three minutes as back came Petersfield whereupon Mike Asare then made it 1-1. Eight minutes later, the visitors then took the lead through Owain Hoskins which they then held on to until nine minutes after the interval. Sam Argent then scored two in as many minutes to swing the pendulum back in favour of the hosts. Victory was all but secured on 78 minutes when Shane Hollamby hit a fourth and decisive goal for the hosts. A good crowd of 135 attended this encounter and, no doubt, included amongst these were one or two from Daventry Town (Southern League) who the 'Row' welcome Saturday for that mouth watering and record breaking F.A. Cup with Budweiser tie for the club. My main hope for this mentioned game is that, locally, they come and support Ben and his team. Just over 400 in their last home tie so, hopefully, many more will turn up and support their local team.

In order to progress, Cove will have to overcome a very stubborn Newhaven (Sussex County League) team whom they visited Saturday having, on their trip, over shared eight goals with them. Cove made the long trip down to Newhaven and arrived following delays around Guildford en route. They took time to settle on a very heavy pitch following the morning’s torrential rain and looked particularly slow at the back letting the Dockers in for their first chance on eight minutes when a forward split the defence, rounded the oncoming keeper but shot weakly that allowed a defender to clear a foot off the line. Cove managed a few chances when the home side were down to ten men through injury but failed to take advantage. The visitors were suffering from a lack of height in defence and, just after the first quarter hour, their defence was again split wide apart and Lee Robinson broke clear to lob the Cove keeper. Cramp to a Cove player brought them down to ten and then a second injury brought on a substitute. Slowly gaining confidence, the ten men and manoeuvred several unsuccessful attacks. The home side countered and, on one attempt, were thwarted by a great save by the keeper and the goalpost. Still down to ten, a cross field move by the Cove midfield led to a thirty yard shot into the bottom corner which brought the equalizer with about ten minutes of the half remaining. Back up to full strength, a strong solo effort brought them into a halftime lead. Both sides shewed great skills but the Dockers height up front was notable. Five minutes into the second half, with Newhaven frantically appealing for offside following a waving flag from the linesman, the referee chose to play on and the forward sprinted down the wing, curved round the keeper and scored in the empty net. Incensed, the home side came back strongly and a vicious volley inside the goal area shot across the goal face but the deficit was reduced two minutes later when a low cross was turned in by Tyler Goacher. Fifteen minutes in, it was Cove’s turn when a four man move across the field restored the two goal advantage. Play ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the half as chances came and were not capitalized. That is, until twelve minutes from the end when the Dockers clawed a goal back through Greg Manton and disaster struck just two minutes from the final whistle as a goalmouth scramble ended with Greg Manton forcing the ball over the line. Two tiring sides played out extra time, and, with no score in the first half, Cove were content to keep the ball safe for a Tuesday replay. Newhaven did almost get the winner but a save from the visiting glovesman touched the ball on to the post and away.

Briefly placing together the remaining ties involving our sides, the curtain fell on Westfield following a 4-0 defeat at Beckenham Town (Southern Counties East League), Wembley went down 3-0 at Cockfosters (Spartan South Midlands League), Epsom Athletic went down 1-0 at Crowborough Athletic (Sussex County League) with a 53rd minute Luke Carpenter goal settling this tie for the hosts, Farnham Town went down 0-1 at home to East Preston (Sussex County League), Windsor were on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline following their trip to Whyteleafe (Southern Counties East League) and, finally, Bedfont & Feltham waved goodbye to further advancement following a 0-1 reversal at Welwyn Garden City (Spartan South Midlands League). Anything but a classic the game at Herns Lane in one of those matches that on paper suggested goals could be plentiful; sadly, not was the case though. As early as the second minute, Bedfont & Feltham had a wonderful chance to take the lead but it passed them by as the hosts just did not offer to many chances once they got themselves in front in the 26th minute through Perry Stallon. Saying that, they did not create that much either and, all in all, the game came and went resulting in an exit for our boys who we know can and will play better throughout the season.

Switching our attention to Premier Division activity, Epsom & Ewell regained top spot following a 3-0 home victory over Frimley Green with second half goals from Mark Jarman in addition to a couple very late efforts from Karl Doughlin and Alex McGregor sufficient to secure top spot and the three points up for grabs. One of the day’s biggest surprises came over at Hanworth Villa as visitors Camberley Town, somewhat surprisingly, secured a 3-1 victory against their high flying hosts. No joy result wise for our bottom two clubs Saturday afternoon. Basement boys Alton Town were beaten 5-0 at Molesey and, just above them, Bedfont Sports went down 4-2 against Badshot Lea. Just above them though, Colliers Wood United ventured over to Croydon picking up a useful point following a 1-1 draw. Finally, Premier Division wise Mole Valley SCR and Ash United went head to head over at the Leg O' Mutton field and honours in this encounter ended all square following a 2-2 draw; all the goals in this match came during the first half.
