Batchelor Institute provides quality training in Community Services and Vet in Schools (VETis) in a number of Central Australian communities and schools.

  • This position is responsible for the delivery of approved Vocational Education Training (VET) courses in Certificate I & II in Community Services and Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways.

  2. Teaching, student assessment, maintenance of student files
  3. Development of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities and materials
  4. Liaison with remote Aboriginal communities and with Central Desert and Barkly Shires as required
  5. Embedding appropriate literacy and numeracy into the learning design
  6. Liaison with other training staff and monitoring of student learning progress and outcomes in accordance with curriculum guidelines of Batchelor Institute, the Education Employment Pathways and National VET Regulator (SNR) standards.
  7. Provide teaching and learning support to students, including student progress, and their support and follow up.
  8. Prepare, deliver and evaluate workshop activities
  9. In cooperation with other staff develop teaching, resource and assessment materials
  10. Participate in flexible course delivery strategies
  11. Advise students on and document assessments of student performance according to the academic rules of Batchelor Institute and the division of Enterprise and Employment Pathways.
  12. Liaise with tutors to monitor and support student academic progress
  13. Consult with Senior Lecturer for counsel of student on their academic progress and recommend appropriate action if required.
  14. Manage student recruitment, enrolment and travel
  15. Provide regular activity plans and reports on academic activity as required. Participate in Performance Management and Quality Assurance activities and programs.
  16. Attend divisional and institute meetings as required
  17. Participate in validation, moderation of units and course monitoring
  18. Maintain personal professional development and assist with research and curriculum review
  19. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation, as directed.
  20. Essential selection criteria
  21. A tertiary qualification equivalent to four (4) year’s higher education relevant to community services, and/or a qualification in Education and four (4) years’ experience relevant to this position.
  22. Essential to the position is a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) and an NT clearance to work with children.
  23. Significant relevant experience preferably within indigenous Australian communities and / or organisations delivering VET training. This includes a demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations.
  24. Proven capacity to work effectively with others in a culturally diverse team, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision and with good organisational and time management skills to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including computer technology and electronic communications.
  25. Demonstrated capacity to undertake course / unit coordination and teaching with limited resources and to initiate and develop culturally appropriate curriculum teaching resources in Community Services and evaluate their effectiveness.
  26. Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of both Indigenous youth and adults enrolled in Community Services courses.
  27. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory C class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.

Special features of this position

The Lecturer B (Certificate I and II in Community Services and, Certificate 1 and 11 Foundational Skills) will be primarily based at Batchelor, although there is flexibility available for placing the position in Alice Springs, and be responsible for the coordination and delivery of literacy and numeracy programs in the Certificate I and II in Community Services courses and the Foundational Skills Training Package. This position requires a deep understanding of literacy learning that has flexible delivery and assessment approaches. Strong collaborative team skills are essential to the position.
