Dear Future Fifth Grade Parents,
We are so excited that you and your students will be joining us for 5th grade! In order to prepare both you and your child, we have outlined a few items to provide a glimpse of what to expect, as well as listed tips and resources to help maintain the levels your students have worked so hard to achieve.
What to expect throughout5thGrade:
Students will be expected to master the following skills:
Work Habits/Study Skills
- Record homework assignments in agenda daily
- Complete and return all classwork and homework assignments on time
- Implement and practice effective study skills
- Monitor progress on graded work through ParentVue/StudentVue in Synergy
- Monitor classroom blog regularly for important information
- Be prepared for class with supplies and materials
Academics
- Read at least 30 minutes each night and document their time in various ways
- Complete 100 basic math facts accurately in four minutes for all operations
- Construct grammatically correct, interesting, and age-appropriate sentences, paragraphs, and essays
- Type accurately 20-30 WPM with appropriate hand position
Behavior
- Adhere to the Cobb County code of conduct including dress code
- Use basic manners in an eating, bathroom, library, hallway and group environment
- Keep personal space organized and clean in all environments
- Take personal responsibility for timely and quality work completion and accept natural consequences
- Problem solve when challenges arise
- Self-advocate when assistance is needed from an adult
- Become student leaders
Summer tips – Please focus on building life skills that are foundational to our curriculum such as:
- Prepare food including shopping for ingredients, preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up
- Use measurement tools in sewing, building, painting
- Play logic and creative thinking games (puzzle books, Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles)
- Discuss local and world events
- Perform community service
- Plan events including budgets (birthday parties, play dates, family dinners, picnics, trips, camping)
- Assist with banking (count money, help write deposit slips and checks, reconcile statements, pay bills, pay at fast food restaurants and verify correct change)
- Play sports and board games
- Gather family tree information
- Interview grandparents and other senior adults about historical events
- Hike state and national parks
- Use paper maps to navigate in a variety of places (subways, amusement parks, trails, long drives)
- Write for a variety of purposes (journal, thank you notes, encouraging others, take a position, document, record, graph)
- Read the newspaper with parental guidance
- Visit local historical sites and museums
- Write lists to practice legible handwriting – print cursive (grocery, to-do, menu, shopping, wish)
