Leadership Development WVEIS 0146
This course is designed to provide students with basic leadership skills. Instructional areas include leadership styles, goal setting, time management, public speaking, job skills and interpersonal relationships. Safety instruction is integrated into relevant activities. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction related to selection, development, and maintenance of individual Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Students are encouraged to become active members of FFA, the national youth organization for those enrolled in agricultural education. FFA is an integral component of the program and provides curricular opportunities that enhance student achievement. Teachers should utilize relevant FFA activities to support experiential learning. The West Virginia Standards for 21st Century Learning include the following components: 21st Century Content Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills and Technology Tools. All West Virginia teachers are responsible for classroom instruction that integrates learning skills, technology tools, and content standards and objectives.

Students at the above mastery level will be able to define leadership, identify leaders, conduct research, and deliver an oral presentation regarding the characteristics of recognized leaders. They will define charisma, give evidence of the effect of charisma, and critique the leadership styles of individuals with varying levels of charisma. Students will identify current issues affecting an organization, community, or the world and present solutions and leadership styles to address such issues. Such solutions should address all aspects of the issue – social, financial, educational, etc. The student can independently solve problems and is self-directed. / The student demonstrates competent and proficient performance and shows a thorough and effective application of knowledge and skills that meet the standard in leadership development. Students will define leadership, identify leaders, conduct research, and produce written evidence regarding the characteristics of recognized leaders. Students will organize and enact community service and school improvement projects and dedicate more than ten hours of time to such projects. They will appraise given itineraries and suggest more efficient uses of time. Students will create a cover letter and resume and evaluate others’ performances in job interviews. Students will explain how to organize formal and informal gatherings and demonstrate communication and social skills needed at such.
