I. ITP 290 Course Description (Internship)

Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college. Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours. Note: For each credit hour the student will work 3.5 hours per week unpaid at the approved organization. This course is intended for the last semester of coursework.

I. ITP 297 Course Description (Co-op)

Supervises on-the-job training for pay in approved business, industrial and services firms, coordinated by the college’s cooperative education office. Is applicable to all occupational technical curricula at the discretion of the college. Credit/work ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.Note: For each credit hour the student will work 3.5 hours per week paid at the approved organization. This course is intended for the last semester of coursework.

III. Evaluation
The course grade will be determined by assignments and reports completed and submitted to the faculty coordinator. Assignments and reports but are not limited to weekly work activity reports, weekly time sheets, internship portfolio, final report and employer review. Students will also work on their resume during the semester.
Employer and employer manager much be approved in advance by the faculty coordinator. The employer manager must execute appropriate agreements before the intern start, and will assist in final student evaluation.
Grades are earned according to the following percentage value and are based on reporting quality and timeliness as well as the final evaluation form.

90-100% / 80 – 89% / 70-79% / 60-69% / 0 – 59%

Prerequisites

This course is intended for the final semester of coursework, therefore all coursework for semesters 1 -3 must be completed before taking an internship.

V. Attendance Requirements

Your attendance at your employer directly affects your success. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the employer in advance if absence or tardiness affects your attendance during your assigned work hours.
The student must notify the Faculty Coordinator if absences exceed one week during the semester. Excessive absences from the work place (2 weeks) can result in Faculty Withdrawal. No refunds will be applicable. See the college catalog for details.
The Faculty Coordinator may also withdraw you for unsatisfactory performance if you have failed to submit two successive reports, time cards, etc without explanation acceptable to the faculty member.
Excessive absences or missed assignments after the withdrawal period will result in an F for this course. No refund will be applicable. See the NRCC catalog for more information.
Inclement Weather Policy
If NRCC cancels classes due to inclement weather, any reports scheduled for that day will be accepted at the next day the college is open. If NRCC is open, but the roads are bad at your home please stay home. Don't risk your life to come to school. Call or email your employer. We will view the high school closings to grant leniency for any assignments due.

VI. Course Content - Planned Schedule

  1. See the Assignments page for details of the planned schedule.
  2. Prior to semester start, the student should contact Mrs. Eaton and have internship or co-op employer selected.
  3. Meet with Mrs. Eaton to get paperwork for you and your employer. Start working at employer.
  4. Submit signed agreements and paperwork to Mrs. Eaton.
  5. Submit activity report and Weekly Work Report every other week on Monday. For example submit reports for weeks #1 and #2 on Monday of Week #3.
  6. Create a table of contents for the work portfolio you will create over the semester.
  7. Create a professional resume using the information in the “Ace the IT Resume” textbook. Revise resume until approved by Mrs. Eaton.
  8. Create an educational plan if you will continue to a university after completing NRCC degree.
  9. Create a job/career plan if you will join the professional work force after completing NRCC degree.
  10. Create a work portfolio that demonstrates your learning during the internship or co-op.

VII. Learning Objectives

  1. This course provides students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained through degree coursework in a work environment.
  2. The student will work as an IT professional in a work environment.
  3. The learning objectives will vary with each student and work place and will be submitted the first week of the semester for approval by the faculty coordinator, employer and student.
  4. This course is intended as a capstone in which the students draws on all the courses taken previously and should be taken the last semester before graduation.

VIII. Instructional Procedures

The instructional procedures will vary depending upon the employer. In addition to the work completed for your employer, you will complete NRCC time cards, weekly activity reports, assignments and a final portfolio,.

IX. Withdrawal Policy

Student Initiated Withdrawal
A student may drop or withdraw from a class without academic penalty during the first 60% of a session. See the current NRCCCatalogfor more details. For purposes of enrollment reporting, the following procedures apply:
  1. After the add/drop period, but prior to a completion of 60% of a session, a student who withdraws from a class will be assigned a grade of "W".
  2. After that time, if a student withdraws from a class, a grade of "F" will be assigned.
Instructor Initiated Withdrawal
  • Note: A student will be awarded an F for excessive absences within the last 40% of classes. See the current NRCC Catalog for more details.
  • A student who adds a class or registers after the first day of class is counted absent from all class meetings missed. Each instructor is responsible for keeping a record of student attendance in each class.
  • Students who have not attended class by the last day to drop the class and receive a refund should be deleted by the instructor during the following week. No refund will be applicable.
  • When a student’s absences equal twice the number of weekly meetings of a class (within the first 60% of classes), the student may be dropped for unsatisfactory attendance in the class by the instructor. The student will be notified of the withdrawal by the Admission and Records Office.
Withdrawal from the College
A student who wishes to withdraw from the college should contact a counselor to determine the appropriate procedure. Failure to follow established procedure could place the student’s college record in doubt and prejudice the student’s return to this or another college.
