Responsibilities include:
- Controlling the viscosity of the drilling fluid known as "mud"
- Listen to mud pumps, checking regularly for vibration and other operational problems
- Maintain the mud tanks and keep them in good repair
- Make sure the derrick is inspected before raising or lowering.
- When making connections latch hand, latches stand of drill pipe and guides driller down into stand with the top drive screwing the stand of drill pipe. Together.
