Meeting was called to order at 9:00 AM.

  1. Discussion Item

a)Graduation Fair – Thursday, May 7 from 10:00 am-7:00 pm in the PE/Health/Wellness Grassy Quad area (bring Certificate of

Achievement forms, answer graduation & transfer-related questions) – Joy announced the Graduation Fair; Sara mentioned graduation related fun stuff such as Shout out Video, food, and free goodies.

b)Health Occupation Skills Certificate (handout) – Joy announced the new Health Occupation Skills Certificate and passed out

a draft of the Advising Sheet.

c)Joy asked for suggestions for off campus breakfast meeting

  1. STEM Updates (Sara & Adrienne)

Adrienne and Sara will speak to High Schools about the STEM Program. Anthony will add linksSTEM to the school website.

  1. Program Reports

Honors – Yvonne announced that Honors Recognition will be on May 15 in the Music Building. She also stressed that students should take up more extracurricular activities to ensure transfer.

Puente – Jassiel mentioned that the end of year celebration will possibly be at Acapulco Restaurant by the end of May.

CHAMPS –Andres stated that the Thomas Williams ( former football star and USC alumni athlete) speech event on April 24

was a great turnout . He suggested that assessment calendar dates should accommodate athletes and bring them into Harbor Advantage. He stressed that assessment for the athletes is a priority and he is working on a powerpoint and advising sheet for

athletes for distribution to counselors. He is also working on an advising sheet for Division I, II and III colleges and universities and mentioned that he may teach counseling class for athletes.

Transfer Center – Sara talked about the STOMP Conference held on April 24 at UCLA. She also announced the first of “virtual” appointments – out of state or long distance teleconference with other schools (UCSB and UC Berkeley). She passed out fliers for Transfer Celebration and Teaching Careers Workshop (with EOPS).

Advantage – Dan mentioned that outreach efforts are meeting expectations. He reiterated that the goal is 400, 150 have been to Harbor. He requested that SEPs should say Math instead of Algebra. Math for the high schoolers has been an issue asstudentsare being assessed at the wrong levels and are failing in their Math classes. He asked for suggestions on how to refer the high schoolers to other programs such as EOPS, Honors, CHAMPS, Puente, etc. Jassiel suggested a capsule of the different programs on the back of the SEPs. The search for an Advantage CGCA is still ongoing.

Retention – Dan stated that the only issue is Early Alert. He asked for suggestions on financial aid workshops and feedback on the appeal process.

UC Counselors Conference dates announced (September 8 @ UC San Diego, September 9 @ UC Riverside, September 10 @

UCLA during registration “blackout” dates for fall.

Counselors suggested Mimi’s Café for the next meeting off campus.
