JOB TITLE:Head of Philanthropy

- MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
- To lead the development and implementation of Samaritans major donor fundraising programme, including a high level appeal, in order to raise significant levels of income to support Samaritans vision that fewer people die by suicide.
- To ensure that the potential of all high value supporters is maximised towards Samaritans vision
- To ensure all Major Donors are supported and managed effectively and appropriately at all levels of the organisation.
- POSITION IN ORGANISATION
- Reports to Head of High Value Fundraising (with a close working relationship with the Directorof Fundraising and Chief Executive)
- Works closely with the Board of Trustees and other senior stakeholders of the charity
- Works closely with members of Samaritans senior leadership team
- Works closely with all the Fundraising Managers
- Manages all Major Donorfundraising ‘products’ – currently a major appeal and a giving club, but with scope for developing further products as the programme develops.
- Liaises with other teams within Samaritans as required
- Recruitment and line management of major donor fundraising staff as the programme develops (this post will immediately recruit a Senior Philanthropy Officer/Philanthropy Manager to report into them once in post).
- SCOPE OF JOB
- Ownership of the Major Donor strategy and it’s successful implementation, leading on the development of the Major Donor income stream at Samaritans to achieve ambitious but realistic growth targets
- Manage the portfolio of donors, personally soliciting 5 figure gifts and above
- Direct senior leadership of the charity as an appropriate part of the cultivation, stewardship and ask process, providing clear brief and direction leading to significant gifts
- Ownership of all processes around cultivation, stewardship and recognition to ensure we maximise our donors potential
- Design and manage an effective and appropriate cultivation event calendar
- Monitor and facilitate moves management for the portfolio across the seven stages of major donor fundraising
- Use effective research, data screening, network mapping and events to cultivate new and existing donors, ensuring the ongoing strength of the major donor pipeline
- Identify and manage risks to the Major Donor programme
- Ensure effective data management and that all record keeping for the major donor programme is updated on the ThankQ database
- DIMENSIONS AND LIMITS OF AUTHORITY
- Sets, manages, forecasts and reports on budget for Major Donor programme
- Lead staff member for major donor fundraising
- Income target agreed with Head of High Value Fundraising annually
- QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Degree Level or Equivalent
- Significant experience of running a Major Gift or appeals programme
- Sound knowledge and experience of fundraising databases.
- Membership of Institute of Fundraising
- Ability to successfully manage a range a stakeholders at all levels of seniority, both internally and externally
- Highly sophisticated communications skills, verbal and written, able to engage donors with our case for support, build rapport easily, read subtlety and nuance
- Excellent planning and organisational skills, able to design and execute strategies to maximise the potential of our donors
- Ability and resilience to work independently and with the drive and determination to grow this income stream for Samaritans
- Strong commitment to personal development, ambitious for themselves and for Samaritans
- EXPERIENCE
- Substantial experience of fundraising with a strong track record inmajor gift fundraising
- Experience of personally soliciting gifts of 5 figures and upwards from major donors, using a range of techniques
- Experience of successfully managing the major donor process end to end leading to gifts of 6 figures and upwards
- Experience of running successful fundraising events and campaigns
- Proven track record and experience of building, developing and managing key relationships at the highest level
- Experience of analysing and reporting on fundraising performance
- Ability to present a fundraising case for support to various audiences, face to face and in writing
- Experience of strategic planning, budgetary control, and working to financial targets.
- Understanding of charity legislation as it applies to fundraising, particularly tax efficient giving
- Understanding of voluntary sector organisations, including working with Trustees and volunteers.
Part 2: DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Operational and Strategic Management
- Management of Samaritans Major Donor programme, producing strategy, development plans and reports
- Develops yearly operational plans needed to achieve annual income targets
- Management of the resources needed to realize our ambitions for Major Donor fundraising
- Responsible for setting annual income and expenditure targets
- Leads on all Major Donor acquisition and cultivation programmes, working where required directly with Director and CEO
- Proactively identifies and manages risk to the success of the Major Donor programme
- Leads on and maintains effective relationship management of key donors
- Works closely with other Fundraising and Communicationmanagers and fundraisers to ensure an integrated approach.
- Ensures target income is reached.
- Works with colleagues in other departments to produce targeted proposals.
- Produce all necessary materials to support major donor fundraising, within budget and to brand guidelines
Event Management
- Ensures the successful end to end execution of a small number of events for cultivation and fundraising purposes.
- Manages other projects and partnerships as required.
Research and record keeping
- Ensures that full biographical details are maintained on key contacts and prospects.
- Ensure ongoing research is resourced in the most cost effective way for the programme
- Ensures that the ThankQdatabase is utilised fully to support planning for the major donor fundraising function
Administration
- Produce regular reports of progress against targets, and forecasts of income pledged
- Supports the management and development of Samaritans’ overall work by working in liaison with other teams and volunteers.
- Carries out any duties that may be reasonably required by the Head of High Value Fundraising.
- Deputises for the Head of High Value Fundraising when required
- Works within and adheres to Samaritans’ diversity and equal opportunities policy
General Duties of a Samaritans’ Staff Member
- Contribute to the effective and efficient running of the General Office as appropriate.
- Participate, as appropriate, in Staff forums and Meetings.
- Adhere to Samaritans’ Polices and Procedures that are in effect from time to time.
- Represent the General Office appropriately across the movement and Samaritans to the wider community as appropriate.
