Westervelts Corners’ News
Our guess is that May is going to pass quite quickly with a number of activities already in the works; something exciting for every grade! April was asensational month with our focus on Education Week and Earth Day activities. We also collected food for a local food bank, and recognized our wonderful administrative professionals (Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Celenza) for helping our families, staff and students every day. We organized community service providers to support our families through youth programs, dental, vision and hearing screening. We helped Royal Orchard Middle School celebrate their 10th anniversary by hosting over 80 Grade 8 students at our school. These well-mannered (and tall!) graduates from Westervelts shared their love of math, by playing math games with our primary students. We would like to thank you again, for packing litter less lunches this month, and we encourage our families to promote waste reduction and help to protect our environment throughout the year.
EQAO begins on Monday, May 25th and continues until June 5th. We would appreciate it, if you could not schedule appointments during this time, and ensure that your children are prepared for the test, by arriving on time, well rested after eating a healthy breakfast. We thank you for your support and wish our grade three students the best of luck! We, of course, would like our students to have the best opportunity to be completely focused for the EQAO assessments.
Westervelts Corners puts the spotlight on Asian Heritage
In December 2001, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.
Throughout May, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by Asian Canadians.
A Mother’s Day wish for our mothers, grandmothers and guardians that’s filled with joy and happy memories.
Supporting the Beginning Reader
Supporting the Beginning Reader
We are pleased to present a workshop for parents of our Grade 1 students on Wednesday, May 13 from 6:30-7:30. Ms. Calder, Ms. Nordick, and our Grade 1 teachers will be sharing reading strategies to develop the skills involved in reading. Information will be coming home soon for our Grade 1 parents. If your child is not in grade 1 and you are interested in attending, please call the school for additional information.
Kindergarten Registration and Welcome to Kindergarten On Thursday, May 21, Westervelts Corners will be hosting a “Welcome to Kindergarten” evening. This evening provides all children who will be starting Kindergarten in September with a wonderful opportunity to experience a full day kindergarten program. Families will learn about the importance of play, inquiry, literacy and numeracy as they visit our kindergarten classes. Teachers will be available to answer questions and share information. Families will receive a courtesy reminder call this week. We are all very excited to meet our newest Westervelts friends!
We are still accepting registrations for next year for junior and senior kindergarten. If you have not yet registered, or have neighbours who have children born in 2010/2011, please encourage them to contact Westervelts Corners P.S. at 905-459-3456. We will be happy to provide you with a registration package and let you know more about our Full Day Kindergarten program.
National Denim Day to Help Fight Breast Cancer
May 4 – May 11, we will be collecting toonies for cancer research. On May 12thwe will have a short but highly meaningful assembly (at 2:20) to build CancerAwareness. Mrs. Martucci, one of our teachers, will be cutting her beautiful brown hair during the assembly and donating it for the creation of a wig for a cancer survivor. We are encouraging all students to bring in a toonie for cancer research. Thank you for your support. And an extra, extra thank you to Mrs. Martucci, as this act of generosity makes a world of difference to a woman with cancer.
Nature walks and Meeting Neighbors What a lovely walk we had enjoying the sunshine and meeting neighbors while walking on the trail.
We had numerous activities to celebrate Education Week. Our older students enjoyed reading books on our very important Character Traits to the younger students, then together creating colourful chalk murals to depict their understanding of the Character Trait discussed.
Education Week Challenge
On April 17th we enjoyed a glorious day outside competing in challenging events that were built on the spirit of Co-Operation, part of our Colour House Program at our school. Thank you Mr. Bond and Mrs. Smith for organizing our Education Week Challenge.
Earth Day Clean Up Around Westervelts Corners
Thank you to the Education Committee for organizing the Earth Day clean up around Westervelts on April 22nd-23rd. Students from JK to grade 5 participated and cleaned up the school property and areas around the school. Many bags of garbage were collected by all students at Westervelts!
Character Education
In April, Ms. Steel, Ms. Law and Ms. Hansra’s classes hosted our monthly assembly and shared with us the importance of Cooperating. We want to thank the students and teachers for all their hard work in presenting to us this terrific assembly. We look forward to our next assembly on Honesty hosted by Ms. Law, Mr. Jackson, Ms.Larkin and Ms. James on May the 21st at 2:20 pm.
Our next character focus is on the trait of honesty. We can show that we are honest when we:
- Demonstrate integrity in your words and actions.
- Acknowledge responsibility for your actions and words.
- Tell the truth and admit to your mistakes.
- Play by the rules.
- Do what is right, even when no one is watching
Please check the Lost and Found box as there are many items which still remain unclaimed. All unclaimed items will be donated to the less fortunate at the end of June.

Police Appreciation Week coincides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the work of police officers across Canada.
During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will honour the work of police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and security.
On the road again: How to keep your cyclist safe
Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start:
The right fit
- children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground
- a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard
- the helmet should fit—if it's too loose, it could fall off, if it's too tight, it's uncomfortable
Get noticed
- a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector
- older riders should have a light and/or reflectors
Follow the rules
- no riding on busy streets
- no riding at night
- stop for all STOP signs
Actions that cause injuries
- driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street
- running the stop sign
- turning without warning
- cycling in the dark
- following the leader—one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn't
