Before watching

Ex. 1 Match the words with their definitions and then translate them into Russian:

flatshare / have enough money to buy
out of depth / continue without stopping for a period of time

Ex. 2 Match two halves of a phrase with active vocabulary from ex. 1:

Ex. 3 Answer the questions with active vocabulary telling true stories about yourself or your relatives and friends:

1)When was the last time you did any work for days on end? What was it? Did you manage to finish it?

2)Do you know anyone or did you have relatives who were invalided home from war?

3)Have you ever looked for a flatshare? If so, have you found him/her? Can you say he/she was a good flatshare for you?

4)Is there a thing you can't afford right now but are planning to buy in the future?

5)How long does it take you to adjust to new circumstances in your life - a job, a flat, a hotel when on holiday?

6)Is there anything you are out of depth with?

7)Can you say you are often haunted by doubts? If so, what sort of doubts haunt you?

8)Is there a person right now who you owe a favouror who owes you one? What is it?

Ex. 4 Choose any phrases from ex. 2 to your liking and make 1 sentence with each phrase.

While watching

Ex. 5Watch the 1st part of the episode and insert the words from active vocabulary in ex. 1:

1)"You're a soldier, and it's going to take you a while to ... to civilian life, and writing a blog about everything that happens to you will honestly help you."

2)"I can't ... London on an Army pension."

3)"Yeah, like that's going to happen. I don't know, get a ... or something?"
"Come on, who would want me for a flatmate?"

5)"You're an Army doctor and you've been ... home from Afghanistan."

6)"Mrs Hudson, the landlady - she's given me a special deal. She ... me a ...."

"What does that mean?"

Ex. 6Say who the sentences in ex. 3 characterize - Sherlock Holmes, John Watson or Mrs Hudson.

After watching

Ex. 7Translate the sentences using active vocabulary:

1)После того, как Джон Ватсон был комиссован с военной службы, он понял, что ему очень трудно приспособиться к мирной жизни. Призраки войны преследовали его.

2)Ватсон не мог себе позволить снимать квартиру сам, поэтому искал себе соседа.

3)Бывший сослуживец Ватсона познакомил его с Шерлоком Холмсом, частным детективом, который нашел недорогое жилье на Бейкер Стрит. Хозяйка квартиры, Миссис Хадсон, задолжала Шерлоку услугу.

Ex. 8Answer the questions using new words and retell Part 1of Episode 1:

1)The first episode of the series shows us Dr John Watson. What do we learn about his past from it? How does he meet his future flatshare Sherlock Holmes and what impression do we get about the detective?

2)Why does the case of "serial suicides" attract Sherlock's attention? What do we learn about the victim, Jennifer Wilson, and the circumstances of her death?

3)There's an episode at the end of Part 1 where Dr Watson is driven to a warehouse where he meets Sherlock's "arch-enemy", as the man calls himself. What does he want from John? Who do you think he is?
