Chronology of Work Experience
July, 2002 – PresentEducational Technology Specialization
Graduate Division of Educational Research
University of Calgary
Teaching: Currently designing, developing and teaching graduate level courses (face-to-face, distributed learning, and hybrid) including:
- Virtual Reality and Simulation
- Instructional Design
- Conceptualizing Educational Technology
Also teach undergraduate courses in the teacher preparation program.
Research: Currently setting up research programs in primary areas of interest – Instructional Design, Virtual Reality and Simulation. One project involves distance training of robotic mission controllers for trouble-shooting Canada’s Space Station robotic arm (Canadarm2) to explore instructional design issues for virtual reality and simulation in distributed environments. A second project examines training, aptitude and assessment for neurosurgeons operating with a robotic arm. A third project focuses on using 3D construction environments to provide “hands-on” and higher-level learning for teachers and students in distance education.
Also collaborating with Dr. Larry Katz on a “Open Learning with Technologies” project to increase employability for disadvantages adults in different populations, using technology and the Peer Intervention Model. Populations included the Mustard Seed and the Tsuu T’ina First Nations. Data collection is complete. Papers in progress.
Service. Currently on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology. Serving on the program committee for the Imperial Oil MT3 program and on the ethics review board for Education.
July, 2001 – Sept, 2003Canadian Space Agency (CSA)
Positronix Corporation
Mayo Education Strategies Ltd.
Validation: Currently working with CSA Training and Operations to validate astronaut and mission controller training for Canada’s Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS). Responsibilities include:
- Development of the validation design
- Development of the validation instruments
- Data collection
- Data analysis
- Data interpretation
- Creation of a validation report
Met with CSA and astronauts from the National Aeronautics Space Administration for three days to discuss the results of the validation, the recommendations provided in the validation report, and an action plan for training modifications.
Astronaut Training: Worked with CSA Training, Operations, and Engineering to produce front-end analysis documents for astronauts operating Canada’s Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM). Responsibilities included:
- Reviewing and revising the Occupational Specification, Course Training Standard and Target Population Report for astronauts operating the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM).
- Developing the crew Course Training Plan (i.e. training blueprint) for the SPDM
MSS Mission Controller Training: Worked with CSA Training, Operations, and Engineering to produce the Course Training Plan or training blueprint for Canadian and NASA Mission Controllers who plan and monitor operations which involve the Mobile Base System (MBS). The training plan includes options for distance delivery (synchronous) of the course.
