The prize was awarded for a brief talk before a small audience on “spells”. In this instance, a “spell” is a special Salopian term for a short passage of poetry (or prose) chosen for its suitability for reciting aloud. The word was used by Frank McEachran, one of the most remarkable men to have taught at Shrewsbury last century (from 1935 to 1975), to describe the passages that he made his pupils recite aloud.

The Murray Senior Prize

This prize is named after J.R. Murray Senior, former Master of this School (1932-1951), and it is awarded to the best historian in the Lower Sixth.
The Quinn Prize

This prize was founded in 1963 by the Reverend James Quinn in memory of his son, the Reverend Edward G. Quinn, killed in the Second World War. It is awarded to the best oral history project in the Third Form.
The Dorothy David Prize

This prize was founded in 1961 by E.W. David in memory of his wife. It is awarded to the outstanding Religious Studies pupil in the Upper Sixth.
The Robertson-Eustace Prize

This prize was founded by Major R.W.B. Robertson-Eustace (O.S.) in 1943. It is awarded to the outstanding pupil in the Upper Sixth.
The Lower Sixth Form

This prize is awarded for the student who has contributed most to the Lower Sixth in terms of fieldwork aptitude, written quality and general enthusiasm toward achieving excellence.

This prize is awarded for outstanding work at GCSE level and includes membership of the Royal Geographical Society.
The Arnold Hagger Mathematics Prize / Y.C. Chow (SH)
This is the main School Mathematics Prize, which was named by Mrs S.M. Hagger in memory of her husband, Arnold Hagger (Mathematics Master 1946-1974), who was Second Master for many years. It is awarded on the results of a paper, which is designed to test innate mathematical ability rather than knowledge, and is open to any pupil in the School.
The Powell Mathematics Prize / A.K.Z. Koh (Ch)
This prize was founded in memory of Lt T.C. Powell, who was killed in the First World War. It is open to Third and Fourth Form pupils, and is awarded for the best solutions to a series of problems, which are set throughout the Michaelmas and Lent Terms.
The David Harrison

This prize is endowed by Mr and Mrs Peter Harrison in memory of their son David, who was Head of Mathematics from 1995 to 1996, and who tragically died in the mountains of Alaska in the Summer holidays of 1996. It is awarded for the best short presentation of a mathematical topic and is open to all pupils in the School.

This prize was presented by the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club in 2000. It is awarded for the completion of an outstanding research project and presentation about it.

This prize is awarded in memory of Gordon Riley, a founder editor of the Shropshire Star and for many years a writer of critiques of Shrewsbury School’s musical and theatrical events for that paper. It is awarded to a musician who has made a significant contribution to both classical and popular music studies during their time at the school.
The Guy Lovett Award / E.R. Storey (MSH)
The Guy Lovett Award is made in memory of a very special Salopian and outstanding oarsman who died of cancer at the age of 26. It is not often awarded but when it is, it is awarded to a pupil who, in the opinion of representatives of the Old Salopian Club and Guy Lovett's friends, has consistently demonstrated the personal qualities of courage, resolve and concern for others.
The West Family Prize / E.M. Pring (EDH)
This prize is awarded annually to a pupil who is considered to have made a notable contribution to good relations between the School and the local community. It was founded anonymously by an Old Salopian in the United States, in memory of Colonel J.M. West (1922-1957 Master and Housemaster of Dayboys and Ingram’s, and Mayor of Shrewsbury in 1952, the School Centenary Year) and Mrs West.
