Year 7Spring (1) NUMBER LINE

Title / Ordering Positive and Negative integers, Fractions & Decimals Lesson 2
Hours / 1
Aims / To help learners to:
Recognise negative numbers
Order positive and negative integers, decimals and fractions;
Use the symbols =, ≠, <, >, ≤, ≥
Decide if a statement expressed algebraically is always, sometimes, or never true giving reasons.

What does each of these symbols mean?
< > = ≤ ≥ ≠
Main Activity
Display each statement on the board and ask pupils to respond with either true or false using their mini whiteboards.
Recap on the number line task from the previous lesson before setting task one.
Task One –
Give pupils the table containing the positive and negative integers, fractions and decimals, and either give them a copy of the line or ask them to draw one on A3 paper. Pupils should choose 10 of the numbers in the boxes and write them in the correct position on the line. Explain to pupils that they must be ready to justify their decision to the rest of the class.
During the class discussion ask pupils,
‘Which numbers were easier to position? Why?
‘Are there any that you aren’t sure about? Why?
Task Two –
Give pupils the sheet of symbols and key words. Explain that they can use either the symbols or the key words to create statements about the numbers on the cards they were given for task one.
Ask pupils to create as many different statements as they can, using as many of the symbol cards or key words as possible.
Explain that pupils can use each card as many times as they like and they should try and link several cards together in one statement.
Explain that the blank cards can be used to add numbers or symbols.
Plenary
Ask pupils to reflect on what new skills they have learnt using the learning journey and the understanding arrow.
>H
H / Decide if a statement expressed algebraically is always true, sometimes true or never true and give reasons.
M / Order decimals to two or three places.
Order positive and negative integers, decimals and fractions; use the number line as a model for ordering of the real numbers.
Use the symbols =, ≠, <, >, ≤, ≥
L / Understand and can use place value in numbers up to 1000.
Recognise negative numbers.
Understand simple decimal notation.
<L / Order numbers to 100 using terms such as greater, less than and in between.
