Job Title / Home Care Assistant
Qualifications / Experience is not necessary as full training will be given. However, experience of delivering domiciliary care to vulnerable people in their own homes, including the provision of personal care, would be an advantage.
Reporting To / Registered Manager
Job Purpose / 1. To enable and / or assist individuals to remain in the community, to be supported and maintained safely in their own homes, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
2. To encourage independence by ensuring that individuals are always given the chance to voice their opinions and be heard.
3. Helping individuals to socialise & ensure interaction with others, especially for those who live alone.
4. Assisting and liaising with other care workers / professionals in providing care to an individual.
5. To represent Tru Caring.
Essential Skills / 1. Understand the effects of ageing, disability, illness and incapacity and the effects these can have on a person and their families well being.
2. Ability to listen, consult and communicate effectively with individuals.
3. Literacy skills should be sufficient to write detailed support plans / reports.
4. Knowledge of the Care Quality Commission Regulations and Standards.
5. Knowledge of safeguarding and protection procedures and protocols for vulnerable adults.
6. Ability to perform personal care, light cleaning, food preparation, shopping and any other relevant activities that assist a person to live independently.
Key Tasks / The tasks and support to be undertaken with and for individuals are likely to include the following. This list is neither exhaustive nor needed in all cases and will depend on which tasks are identified as necessary.
  1. To visit individuals at times directed by Tru Caring. This will include weekend work.
  1. To be vigilant for signs of distress or anxiety; any deterioration in physical and/or mental health, or safety of the environment, and to report these urgently to Tru Caring. This could involve specific activities considered to be therapeutic for an individual's social and emotional wellbeing.
  1. To perform all tasks in a way that demonstrates respect for privacy, dignity and value of all irrespective of disability, age, gender, race or personal background.
  1. Report both verbally and in writing on an individual’s general condition and well being.
  2. Cleaning the home may include vacuuming, washing up, bathrooms, kitchens, toilet etc and general tidying using appropriate domestic equipment and appliances as available.
  1. Moving or handling the individual with or without a mechanical hoist.
  2. Make beds and use pressure care aids as directed.
  3. Assist individuals in maintaining their personal hygiene (NOT nail care), washing and bathing, dressing, undressing, shaving, dental care and hair washing.
  4. Report accidents and incidents to the senior member of staff on duty.
  1. Assistance with eating and / or drinking including meal preparation. To manage basic food hygiene and management of food stores and/or refrigerator.
  1. Toileting and management of incontinence (including in relation to the process of menstruation).
  1. Light fires or operate other sources of warmth
  1. Launder and iron clothes and/or bed linen if necessary
  1. Undertake shopping, payment of bills if detailed in the Care Plan
  1. Provide support and encourage outings where appropriate. For example – accompany on a walk, shopping trip, social outings or appointments.
  1. Assist the individual to take prescribed medication in accordance with the policies and standards for domiciliary care providers pertaining to administration of medication.

Care of Service users /
  1. Assist in the care through the delivery of individual planned care programmes.
  2. Promote independence and dignity
  3. Assist in enabling individuals to live their chosen lifestyle.
  4. Talk to and listen to the individual.
  5. Report complaints directly to the senior in charge as soon as they are made.

Other Duties /
  1. Undertake such in house and external training and supervision which is appropriate to your role and has been identified through a training needs appraisal.
  1. As required, maintain accurate and legible records and submit them when required by the Manager
  2. Maintain confidentiality of information at all times.
  1. Advise a person of the complaints procedure when appropriate.
  1. Comply with legal requirements including National Minimum Standards.
  1. Be committed and promote Equal Opportunity and Anti-Discriminatory Policies and Procedures in relation to both service supervision and employment issues.
  2. Work within the policies, procedures and guidelines of Tru Caring Ltd.
  1. Provide support as part of a team, liaising with informal carers and other agencies/ professionals.
  1. Any other such duties as may be from time to time required to ensure the safe running of the service and delivery of appropriate care to service users
  1. To summon appropriate assistance in an emergency. All action should support the independence of the service user, as specified in the Care Plan.
  1. You will have contact with vulnerable people are you are therefore required to reveal any criminal convictions, bind over orders or cautions, including those that would normally be classed as spent. If you do not complete the application correctly, it will be returned. If successful in your application you will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
