Since 1999 Chair for Modern History (focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries) atthe University of Konstanz.
1996–1997 Fellow atthe Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. 1999 Gleim Prize for Literatureof the Town of Halberstadt. Since 2000 full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academyof Sciences and Humanities. 2001 Anna KrügerPrizeof the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. July 2001–June2002 Fellow-in-Residence at NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study). Since 2004 member of Academia Europaea (London).
