Art 1

Pelham High School Kim Hinds

Course time: (2nd Period) T & TH 7:45-9:37, F 8:44-9:28

Course days: T, TH, F

Location: D374

Course Description:

Art does not exist without an audience. Furthermore, art cannot be appreciated unless that audience can analyze what they are looking at. In order to understand or appreciate art, one must understand its language and syntax. The language of art (elements) and the syntax(principles) are used both in creating and analyzing art. Understanding the elements will help an artist see the world around him/her in terms of line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color. Utilizing the principles will allow artists to create more accurate or visually stimulating work. This class gives students an introduction to the terms, skills, and processes necessary to begin studying, discussing, and creating art.

Art Elements: Line, Shape, Form, Value, Texture, Color, and Space.

Design Principles: Balance, Variety, Proportion, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Repetition and Unity

Grading Procedures:

Grading artwork is very different from grading a math quiz. The right and wrong answers are not always clear; therefore I will use a rubric for each project that will break down the assignment into different objectives specific to the project and will include points for effort, creativity etc. A grading rubric will look like this:

Grading Criteria / 3x / 2x / 1x
Completed Objectives 12pts
Effort 12pts
Creativity 4pts
Craftsmanship 4pts
Paper (all or none) 4pts

Instead of exams we will have comprehensive project based finals. NO exemptions will be given.

Many projects will take over a week to complete. Therefore project grades will not be put into INOW until completion. However, practice work, participation, and critique grades will be regularly.

It is up to the student to monitor/ adhere to deadlines. Students are responsible for turning in work on time.

Make-up Work Procedures:

Students will be allowed to turn in projects upon return from being out. Additional time will be given when out of school.

Digital Procedures:

Chromebooks and desktop computers will be utilized throughout this course

Personal phones/tablets are allowed only with advance permission and are to be used as a research/reference tool. Any abuse of this will result in device be confiscated and turned into the office (refer to PHS policy below)

Other Information

Above all, this class should be an enjoyable, enriching experience. In order for students to earn the privilege of using art materials and working in a studio environment, they must follow the rules and understand that while many of the projects are fun and hands-on, art class is NOT playtime. It is my hope that students will learn to enjoy art at many different levels. Many students approach this class with the attitude of “I can’t draw!” The solution to this is that if a student is willing to learn, I can teach them! My grading is not based on talent, but rather on effort, completion of objectives, continued growth and overall improvement. If you have any questions or comments about this letter, or the program, please call the school at 624-3701 or email me at
