Programming Scenario – Community Service

You are students of a smoke-free campus and in a residence hall that is conveniently located right on the corner of campus in a designated smoking area. Though this area is designated for smoking, due to it being located on a city owned street, the university has decided not to put any cigarette receptacles in this area. After weeks of students from your hall smoking in this area and throwing their cigarettes on the ground; the grass is filled with cigarette butts. Your task is to plan a program and/or initiative that not only helps to clean up the cigarette butts, but also motivates students to take responsibility to discard their butts.

Programming Scenario – MAP-Works

You are the officers of a house cabinet. Your aggregate information from Map-Works indicates that 32% of the residents on your house are struggling with social integration. However, 63% indicate they are comfortable with their academic situation. The social integration category includes items such as homesickness, peer connections, living environment, roommate relationships, and campus involvement. Using this data, design a fitting program for your house. Include all of the pieces of the process that have been discussed.

Programming Scenario – Cabinet Elections

You are CA’s on KitKat House. Due to lack of interest in the spring, your house held cabinet elections for this academic year the first week of classes. Several freshmen indicated interest, and they were elected into cabinet positions, including the president. Now three weeks into the semester with a couple of house meetings and programs done, you are recognizing that there are challenges to be addressed in regard to handling responsibility and following through on commitments that have been made. The cabinet officers have made it clear that they see themselves as adults who are able to handle their positions with little input or guidance from you; however, you often must remind them to call a meeting, create an agenda, advertise a program, and include residents who are remaining on the edges of the community. Using this information, create a program that will address the issues that you see at work within the cabinet.

Programming Scenario – Health and Wellness

You are CA’s on Snickers House. One of your residents has approached you because they were just tested and treated for the STD, Chlamydia. The resident continues to tell you that they have had unprotected sex with 3 other residents on different floors. The resident is now feeling ashamed and uncomfortable around other residents and still hasn’t informed the 3 people about their condition. With the information provided from the resident, how will you organize a program that addresses this issue and hopefully prevent similar occurrences from happening?

Programming Scenario – Social Justice

It has been brought to your attention in a staff/hall council meeting that an underrepresented group of residents in your building are having a hard time adjusting to the environment where they live. SmurfVillage is a residence hall located in the Midwest with a population of 28,000 students where majority are from the Midwest and are top notch in terms of their academic abilities. In the past, Heart State University (HSU) has been unable to attract underrepresented groups. The school has now diversified their student body and figured it would be best if approx. 70% of the underrepresented students were assigned to live in the same residence hall on the same floor. Other than sharing the same bathroom; this group of students have not had much interaction with other residents, nor do they feel like they have anything in common with the typical HSU student. Using the information above, create a program that will address these issues on that floor as well as the building.
