Fun-day Assignment - Engineering-ish Computer Game-o-rama
Here’s an assignment that incorporates computer games and engineering. There are a bunch of computer games out there that are related to various engineering concepts. In this assignment, you will play 4 of these engineering-related games on engineering-games.net (see link below).
Process
- Choose your 4 games. Pick 1 game from each of the 4 columns below.
Group 1
- Fantastic Contraption
- Rollercoaster Creator
- Gears
- Gears and Chains
- Electric Box 2
- Bridge Builder
- Bridge Builder 2
- Building Bridges
- Liquid Measure 1
- Liquid Measure 2
- Plumber 2
- Play the 4 games for a total of at least 60 minutes. Play each game for 10-20 minutes. You will need to finish your game play in time to complete the next step, and you may need to record some information while you play each game, so make sure you read through the next step before you begin play.
- When you are finished with the 4 games, open a blank Word document. Put the following in your document for EACH game:
- Name of the game
- 1-sentence description of it
- Number of minutes you played it
- Maximum level you reached
- Something you liked about it
- Something you didn’t like about it
- 3 or more complete, well-written sentences describing how the game relates to engineering and/or technology (in addition to the fact that it’s running on a computer)
- 1 complete, well-written describing how the skills in the game relate to a specific engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical, architecture, civil, etc.) – make sure you specify the discipline
- Small picture (no larger than 3 inches) of a game screen. To do this, open up a game screen, preferably one where you are actually playing. Hold down the ALT key and press the Print Screen key. Swap to your word document, click where you want the picture, then paste the picture using whatever paste option you normally use. Resize the picture as necessary.
Additional Rules and Guidelines
- You must only play the games listed, and you must play only one from each column.
- You will need to use your time wisely to spend the required time playing the games while also having enough time to finish step 3.
- The format you use in step 3 is up to you, but it must be easy for me to tell what information you are providing.
- If you want to move your picture around but it doesn’t move like you want, change the text wrapping options. If you don’t know how to do this, ask a student who does.
Finishing and Grading Rubric
- You must finish this assignment by the end of class. You will NOT be able to finish later or make it up unless it is due to an excused absence.
- Do not print your document. I will grade it at your computer, or you can share it with me via Google docs.
