The Elephant’s Child-lyrics sheet
In Africa
Hush Baby (repeat)
(Narrator )
The drums play low and the time moves slow
As the rivers flows in Africa
The drums play low, makes you want to go
See the children grow in Africa
Come along, now the drums are growing strong
Everybody knows the song in Africa
Come and take a chance
Everybody wants to dance
It’s the land of romance in Africa
In Africa…(4x’s)
Where the world began ooohh
In Africa
Every single day you see the animals play
Makes you want to stay in Africa
Come on everyone before the day is done
There’s a land that’s full of fun in Africa
Come along, now the drums are growing strong
Everybody knows the song in Africa
Quiet little one come and join me in the sun
See a new day has begun in Africa
Hush baby (repeat)
The Great Grey Green and Greasy Limpopo River
Oh the great grey green and greasy Limpopo River
Is not the kind of place for a child to be
The sound of it will surely make you quiver
And cure you of your curiosity
Snakes on the banks and the crocodiles live in her
Don’t you know that the hippopotami float near the shore
If you get too close you might just be their dinner
And you’ll never see your family any more
There are fever trees on every bank
And if you please, it’s dark and dank,
Don’t get too close you best watch out
They’ll bite your nose, they’ll get your snout,
They’ll knock you here and there about (REST)
Oh the great grey green and greasy Limpopo River
Is everything you’ve ever heard it was
The very sound of it will make you shiver
It’s mostly mud, a little crud and scuzz
There are slinky snakes on every bank
And pirates who have walked the plank
So watch your feet and every inch
Or you will get a painful pinch
They’ve got you in their clinches (NO REST)
Oh the great grey green and greasy Limpopo River
Will cure you of your curiosity (2x)
A Crocodile Wink
Oh I have I seen a crocodile, what will you ask me next?
Your question is ridiculous, it really has me vexed.
Of course I’ve seen a crocodile, in answer to your plea,
The only thing I’m worried about is did he see me?
Oh have I seen a crocodile, then how shall I reply?
For if you listen carefully, I’ll answer by and by
Look there above the waterline try hard now not to blink.
For if you watch him carefully, I think he just might wink.
Come hither little one he says for I’m a crocodile,
And even though he’s crying tears I think I saw him smile.
Come hither little one he says for I’m a crocodile,
Come closer and I’ll whisper it oh curious little Elephant’s Child
There in the river see him now his eyes as black as ink
His tail is green his teeth are white his underneath is pink
Why does he look at me that way, I don’t know what to think.
It is an eerie sight indeed to see a crocodile wink!
Pull!
This is the time for heroics,
This is the time to be brave
If we all work together and do our part,
This elephant’s life we’ll save…..PULL! EVERYBODY PULL!
Dig with your heels and your back paws.
Tug with your hands or your claws.
Never give in or the croc will win,
He’s holding our friend in his jaws….PULL! EVERYBODY PULL!
(Dialogue)
PULL! EVERYBODY PULL!
This is no joke this is not a prank,
Someday this pachyderm will thank
All who would do the best they could now
Now everyone give a yank… PULL! EVERYBODY PULL!
PULL! (repeat)
A Really Truly Trunk
There’s not much to do when a fly is stinging you,
Unless you have a really truly trunk
There’s not much fun, no relief from the sun,
Unless you have a really truly trunk
Schlop up some mud from the great Limpopo
Choose a banana from the top of the tree
You’ll have friend everywhere that you both go,
That’s the kind of nose for me!
Before he had a clue just what he was going to do
He never really knew he had the trunk for it
But now the has a flare, a nose extraordinaire
Which he can really blare just like a trumpet
A muzzle or a beak or a new probiscus
A bill or a prow or a snout
You get a good whiff of a blue hibiscus,
Now you’ve got a nose with clout!
A really truly trunk (2x)
You get a good whiff of a blue hibiscus
Now you’ve got a nose with clout!
