INTRODUCTION TO THE COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT
Catalog Description:
20 – Introduction to the College Environment2 units
A course designed for new and returning students to familiarize them with college life, information, and skills needed for achieving academic success. Course emphasis will center on knowledge of resources and services, college policies, success skills, and student rights and responsibilities. May not be taken if Psychology-Counseling 20 has been taken. 2 hours.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate:
- knowledge of campus resources;
- understanding of student rights and responsibilities;
- knowledge of college procedures and programming deadlines;
- ability to discuss their general or specific educational goal(s), at that time;
- knowledge of AA Degree, Certificate, and/or transfer requirements, depending on their educational goal(s), at that time;
- knowledge of registration procedures;
- knowledge of Matriculation services and their rights regarding those services;
- ability to use the college catalog and class schedule;
- ability to identify and overcome barriers to their college success;
- awareness of collegiate evaluation processes and procedures.

- Catalog course descriptions and course prerequisites

- Strategies for college success – managing the system
- Transfer requirements to four-year universities
- Communication with professions/instructors and peers
- Cultural diversity on campus and in the community
- Choosing a collegiate major or program of study
- Using the Learning Resource Center
- GPA computation
- Value clarification and college success
- Environmental factors which affect collegiate success
- Overview of higher education in California (CC, CSU, UC, and private)
Methods of Presentation:
- Lecture, small group discussion, class activities, writing assignments, campus tours, and guest speakers.
Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Class discussions and participation, class exercises and writing assignments, journals, quizzes and examinations.
