Every sophomore at Saint Ignatius High School is required to fulfill one semester of Theology by taking the Sophomore Service course during his sophomore year. Sophomore Service has two components: (1) the experiential component--doing community service off campus during the school day for 3 hours at a time one day per week (2) the reflective component--attending a weekly seminar to learn Catholic Social Doctrine. A student is placed at a nursing home, hunger center, grade school, hospital, or other non-profit agency—which, will not interfere with an extracurricular, job, homework time, family time, or how a student usually gets to or from school. More detailed information is given to students and their parents/guardians at the beginning of the semester he is scheduled for Sophomore Service.
At this time, however, you are invited to consider an alternative service placement--service as a counselor either in the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) or in the Arrupe Summer Program (ASP). SEP begins on Monday, June 12th ends on Friday, July7th. More details about SEP will follow once accepted. ASP begins with mandatory orientation on Tuesday, June 13th and ends on Friday, July 14th(half day/counselors only). In order to receive Sophomore Service creditexcellent attendance is expected; if you are going to miss any days, please discuss with SEP or ASP camp directors. SEP and ASP will be off July 4th.
As a service and formational experience for Saint Ignatius students, SEP provides academic, recreational, and cultural enrichment to boys between the 7th and 8th grades. The camp begins with campers on Monday, June 12th, the typical day runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., but counselors are occasionally required to stay later. Under the supervision of Mr. Antonelli and a staff of Saint Ignatius teachers, an SEP counselor serves as (1) a teacher’s aide in English, math, reading, science or art; (2) a coach of a team of campers who will play a half dozen sports; and (3) a proctor during lunch and field trips.
As a service and formational experience for Saint Ignatius students, ASP provides educational and recreational activities to boys and girls who have completed 3rd – 6th grade. Children participating in the Arrupe program come from diverse and mostly low-income backgrounds. ASP begins on Wednesday, June 14th, the typical day runs from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Under the supervision of the Arrupe Staff and other adults connected with Saint Ignatius. An ASP counselor will be assigned 1 or 2 campers for the length of the program to serve as their tutor, friend, coach, and role model.

Please note that SEP and ASP counselors will be required to perform some additional service during the semester of their seminar course during their sophomore year. This is an extra-curricular requirement of all sophomores regardless of when they perform their service. These service hours must be completed through one of more than 20 different programs sponsored the Christian Action Team (C.A.T.) here at Saint Ignatius. Also required of SEP and ASP counselors is a three-page typed essay due the first day of classes for the 2017-2018school year. This is a paper that is otherwise required at the end of the Sophomore Service semester. Essay instructions are given during the summer.
During either the First Semester or Second Semester of sophomore year, SEP and ASP counselors will receive four free periods a week as “comp time.” These four periods are scheduled at the discretion of Mr. Joe Ptak. SEP and ASP counselors must still attend the seminar mentioned in the first paragraph.
Please submit the application for SEP/ASP to Mr. McLaughlin in the Sophomore Service office, located on the 2nd floor of Loyola Hall next to the Theology Department, by Friday, March 3rd, no later than 3pm. All student applicants will be notified on Wednesday, March 22nd and, if accepted, will be expected to perform that service opportunity.
