The Big House Revisited
Weekend trip to the Big Houses in Counties Mayo and Roscommon
The tour will take place from Friday 1st April to Sunday 3rd April 2016 and is led by Rose Mary Craig, IGF Board Member.
The group will be based in ENNISCOE House, Castlehill, near Crossmolina, Co Mayo, the family home for twelve generations, of Susan Kellett and her son DJ and his new bride; we will spend the weekend enjoying the unique atmosphere of Enniscoe and its amenities.
Day One: Friday 1st April
Departing from Dublin (Simmondscourt Road,Ballsbridge) approximately 10am on Friday 1 April in our coach the group will visitenroute to Enniscoe, STROKESTOWN HOUSE, former home of the Mahon Family, where the group will lunch and then visit CLONALIS, home of Mr and Mrs Piers O’Conor Nash.
Day Two: Saturday 2nd April
On Saturday, following a morning at ENNISCOE HOUSE seeing the house, gardens and Heritage Centre (where we will lunch) there will be a visit the JACKIE CLARKE Historical Material Collection, housed in a former bank building (by T M Deane) in Ballina and the gothic revival BELLEEK CASTLE, former home of the Knox-Gore family, designed by J B Keane (with additions by JF Fuller) which was purchased and restored by Mr M Doran whose son Paul now runs it as a hotel. It also has a fascinating fossil and armour museum.
Day Three: Sunday 3rd April
On Sunday, we will take our leave of Enniscoe and head to FOXFORD WOOLEN MILLS established in 1892 by Mother Agnes Morrogh-Bernard and still running successfully, then to WESTPORT HOUSE, owned by the Browne Family since the 1650’s where the present house dates from 1730 built by Richard Cassels with later additions by Thomas Ivory and James Wyatt. After lunch in the Wyatt Hotel Brasserie we will visit the neo gothic TURLOUGH HOUSE,Castlebar, former home of the Fitzgerald Family (sold 1991), designed by T N Deane where the National Museum’s Museum of Country Life is located (in an adjacent modern building). From here, the group will depart for Dublin arriving approximately 7pm.

COST: €485 per person sharing. This includes 2 nights bed, breakfast and dinner in Enniscoe House, welcome drink, 3 lunches, entrance fees, private coach and contribution to the Irish Georgian Society.
ACCOMMODATION: There will be a single supplement of €100 as accommodation is limited at Enniscoe House and its converted stables. We would ask you to consider sharing in order to allow as many as possible to participate (max 30).
Please pay NON REFUNDABLE deposit (€150) by 29 February and balance by 14 March.
